ᐅ What to do if BILLY shelves are still wobbly despite being fixed to the wall?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my Billy shelves from IKEA, which I have properly mounted using the intended wall fasteners. Despite this, I notice that the shelves wobble when I lightly kick them or take something out. The fasteners are correctly installed, and I have already tightened the screws. It can’t be the wall itself, as it is solid, and the anchors I used are supposedly suitable.

Can someone explain how it is possible that the shelves still wobble despite correct wall mounting? Are there any special tips or tricks to permanently solve this issue? I mainly use the shelves for storing books and want to avoid them becoming unstable over time.

Looking forward to your experiences and suggestions!

I'll go into a bit more detail:

With BILLY shelves, the back panel is a load-bearing element, as it prevents any side-to-side movement. The back panel is usually attached only with thin nails. Over time, these nails can loosen, causing wobbling.

Solution: Remove the back panel and reattach it, using self-tapping screws or small brackets instead of the thin nails. This significantly improves stability.

Additionally, wall mounting is very important. The supplied bracket and screw are often too weak to withstand strong leverage. It is advisable to use additional brackets fixed at the bottom of the shelf to prevent tipping.

Have you checked if the shelf is sitting completely flat on the floor? Even a slight unevenness can cause wobbling. Small washers or furniture glides can help here.

How wide, deep, and tall are the shelves? Are you using a single shelf or multiple units placed side by side? Are they connected to each other?

That explains a lot. I had hoped the back panel was mostly for appearance, but apparently not.

To answer your questions: The shelf is 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide, 30 cm (12 inches) deep, and about 202 cm (79.5 inches) high. It stands alone, unconnected. The floor is relatively level, I have checked.

I will definitely reattach the back panel properly using screws instead of nails and see if I can add some extra brackets. Thanks for the professional analysis!

One last question remains regarding connecting multiple BILLY units: Is it worth securing them together for added stability with freestanding units, or only when several are placed side by side?

Connecting multiple shelves is mainly beneficial when they are placed directly next to each other. This way, they support each other and become more stable overall.

For standalone BILLY shelves, connecting them has little effect since the connection is only made at the sides and does not significantly improve stability.

In your case, you should focus on securing the back panel, preventing the base units from sliding, and using several strong angle brackets to attach them to the wall.

Another option is to use metal anchors or heavy-duty wall plugs in the wall attachments, as simple plastic plugs may fail under high loads.
