Hello everyone,

I recently bought a few BILLY bookshelves from IKEA and noticed that they can feel a bit wobbly or unstable under light load. This isn’t ideal, especially when placing heavy books or decorations on them. So, my question to the community is: what DIY methods are effective for stabilizing BILLY shelves permanently? I’m particularly interested in affordable and easy-to-implement solutions that don’t require extensive tools. Please share any experiences you have with stabilization techniques, including tips on materials or procedures. Thanks in advance!

Screw on the wall brackets, replace the back panel with a plywood sheet, evenly arrange the shelves. Usually, that’s all it takes.

A small step-by-step guide for stabilizing the BILLY shelf:

1. Align the shelves carefully and adjust for uneven floors using felt pads or thin wooden shims.

2. Remove the back panel and replace it with a 6-8mm (1/4–5/16 inch) plywood board. Secure it firmly with screws.

3. Attach metal brackets at the top and bottom on the inside between the wall and the shelf unit. Use appropriate wall anchors depending on the wall type.

4. Add additional reinforcement by installing internal plywood strips on the side panels if you plan to store particularly heavy items.

5. Always distribute the load evenly; avoid overloading individual shelves.

This creates a stable structure that barely wobbles even under heavy loads. It is important to carry out all steps carefully and precisely.

Good luck!

This is actually the best and most permanently stable modification. Alternatively, you can double the standard back panel by adding a second back panel. While this only moderately improves stability, it can be done with little effort.

Additionally, I recommend using at least two sturdy wall brackets (top and bottom) to prevent the unit from tipping over.

If you want to measure and align the shelf accurately, a spirit level can be very helpful and save you from having to readjust multiple times.
