Menno_dra11 May 2020 14:23Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago, I started looking more closely at furniture from the Ikea Brimnes range, especially because of its durability. Since I’m planning to buy several units, I’m curious about your experiences with the longevity of Ikea Brimnes furniture.
I’m particularly interested in these points:
- How durable are the materials under normal to heavy use?
- Are there any common weak spots or defects that tend to appear over time?
- Do you consider this furniture a good investment in terms of durability and value?
- Do you have any tips for care or handling to help the furniture last longer?
I’m looking forward to hearing your experiences, and please feel free to mention how long you’ve owned your furniture. Thanks in advance!

Hi Menno_dra!
I can tell you, I’m really impressed with the Brimnes series! I bought a chest of drawers two years ago, and it still looks great and works perfectly.
The quality is really good for the price, and even with regular use, it holds up well. Of course, it’s not solid wood, but the particleboard is well glued.
I’ve had no issues with the hinges or drawers; everything runs smoothly without any problems. Maintenance is simple: just wipe with a damp cloth, no harsh cleaners.
Definitely a furniture series I can recommend and would buy again anytime. So: full marks from me for durability!

Good morning,
Regarding the durability of Ikea Brimnes furniture, I can summarize the following based on various studies and consumer reports:
- Material: Brimnes uses melamine-coated particleboard, which is cost-effective but prone to edge swelling if not properly maintained or exposed to high moisture.
- Mechanisms: The shelves and hinges are functional, but with heavy use, some wear on the fittings may occur.
- Care instructions: Avoiding water accumulation and mechanical overloading increases the lifespan.
Conclusion: For the price, Brimnes furniture offers decent durability but is not designed to last for decades like solid wood-based furniture. A good investment if used with care.

Hello Menno_dra,
I would like to provide you with a detailed assessment of the durability of Ikea Brimnes, as expectations often vary on this topic.
Brimnes is primarily made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which is an affordable and sturdy material. However, like many similar constructions, the quality largely depends on the finishing of edges and surface treatment.
Issues I have observed and experienced personally include:
- Edges that can chip or peel off over time, especially if the furniture is moved frequently.
- Load limits on the drawers: excessive weight or frequent heavy use of the drawer slides can lead to slight deformation.
- Stability related to the assembly process: careful screwing and securing is essential, as any play in the connectors reduces overall durability.
I recommend paying close attention to all screws and joints during assembly and only loading the furniture after full installation. For longer lifespan, regular checks of the connections are also advisable.
I can only confirm that. Avoiding moisture significantly extends the lifespan.
I agree, provided the usage stays within the recommended load limits.
If you can share more details about your specific living situation and intended use, I would be happy to help assess how well Brimnes suits your needs.
