Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into the durability and everyday usability of the Ikea Hemnes furniture series, especially in homes with high humidity levels. My main question is: What are your experiences with HEMNES furniture under consistently elevated humidity conditions, for example in older buildings or terraced houses with poorly controlled indoor climates? I am particularly interested in whether visible damage occurs, such as warping or swelling of wood surfaces, deformation, or even lasting material damage.

It would also be helpful to learn how these pieces compare to other solid wood or veneered products and whether special maintenance or protective measures are advisable or even necessary.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello maleo,

your question is very well formulated and practical, and I can share my own experience: I have a HEMNES dresser in a room with a high humidity level of about 70-75%, which can briefly rise to 80% during summer due to poor ventilation. After about one year of use, I have not noticed any visible warping or swelling, but I also make sure to air the furniture regularly and avoid direct contact with water.

Solid wood, as used in HEMNES, naturally reacts more sensitively to moisture compared to particleboard with laminates, but it is significantly more durable than veneered MDF furniture. Good air circulation in the room is important because stagnant humid air promotes problems such as mold or material deformation.

Simple care with occasional wiping using a slightly damp cloth followed by drying is completely sufficient for me. However, I would avoid aggressive cleaning agents or excessive water.

If you need more details, feel free to ask!

The question of using HEMNES furniture in high-humidity environments is quite relevant. The series is made of solid pine wood, which is known to be hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs or releases moisture, potentially causing dimensional changes.

In practical terms:
- With consistently high humidity levels (above 65-70%), slight swelling of the wood surfaces may occur over time.
- Furniture with oiled or lacquered finishes offers better protection against moisture compared to untreated wood.
- It is important that the furniture does not touch walls directly to allow for air circulation.

For long-lasting use in damp rooms, I recommend using a dehumidifier and regular ventilation. If visible warping or large cracks appear, it usually indicates a ventilation problem and resulting wood integrity issues.

In summary: HEMNES solid wood is durable but requires specific indoor climate conditions to maintain its condition over time.

Exactly! I used to have my HEMNES dresser right against the wall, and honestly, after a few months there were slight deformations on the back. Since I’ve been leaving a 2–3 cm (around 1 inch) gap from the wall, it’s been fine! 😊

Also: I’m a huge fan of this series! It looks great, is sturdy, and with a bit of care, really durable. In my bathroom corner (where humidity is often high), I haven’t had any issues so far – just a bit of ventilation and the occasional wipe with a damp cloth, that’s all it takes!

So I’d say: no worries, the HEMNES furniture is solid, but you don’t have to keep it out of bathrooms with constant high humidity.

I’m not going to speak badly of the HEMNES series outright, but it’s important to remember that this is pine wood, which simply wasn’t designed for extreme conditions.

From my experience, customers often expect affordable solid wood furniture to be as resistant to moisture as, for example, furniture fronts coated with plastics or PVC solutions. That’s a misconception.

Even at a humidity level of just 60% indoors, which many still consider relatively moderate, the wood can expand, shrink, or otherwise change over time. I intentionally use HEMNES in a guest room that is rarely used but stays quite cool and damp in winter. After three years, you can see slight discoloration and minor warping along the edges.

My conclusion: If you use HEMNES in such environments, you should either accept the condition of the finished product as it is or be prepared for extensive ongoing maintenance — otherwise, it’s better to choose other materials.

At least if you care about flawless appearance and dimensional stability!

In that case, better look for other materials.

I agree.

My tip:
- Do not place furniture directly against damp walls
- Ventilate the room regularly
- Use only a small amount of water when cleaning

This way, HEMNES furniture will hold up well even in higher humidity.
