ᐅ We are demolishing a 90-year-old house – what can be preserved?

My wife and I are taking over my grandmother’s property, as the garden is becoming too large for her at an advanced age. There is a charming little house on the plot that has been standing for many decades.
After some consideration, we have decided, with a heavy heart, to demolish it because renovating would neither make financial sense nor suit our space requirements. However, we would like to try to incorporate some elements of the old house into the new one. Some ideas we have so far:

- Clean and “rescue” the bricks from the walls to use as flooring for the entrance area (or for a fireplace, or as decoration for a wall) in the new house
- Reuse ceiling beams as decorative beams
- Reuse the front door (depending on the measurements)

Do you have any other ideas on how to creatively preserve the charm of an old house without it becoming too expensive? I look forward to any suggestions!

Best regards

Hey Tihiddi, thanks for your response. That concern is exactly why we feel we simply don’t have the capacity to take on such creative detours.

The idea about the house number is a good one, though.
What are your plans for the roof tiles?
And regarding the demolition: Did you do the entire demolition yourselves or just the gutting? What costs did that save you? Would you do it again?

Partly sold, partly stored for later use as a roof for the wood shed.

Completely demolished by ourselves because there was no other option.
We did not want to strip it down and renovate.

During the demolition, we also realized that was the best decision.
Ceilings too low, walls crooked, worms or moisture in the timber framing, etc....

What also comes to mind is possibly keeping leftover old wallpaper to use as decorative elements, or really thinking about how to incorporate the old bricks into the garden. Alternatively, viewing old windows and tables more as decorative elements—placing a beautiful picture behind them or a large printed photo of the old house.

Yes, the idea with the photo is also a good one. We are planning to do that as well.
Before and after pictures.
As well as aerial photos.

Wow, it’s great that you have something like this too.
What other usable materials are available?

It depends on what the house allows. We couldn’t completely remove a single tile or wallpaper. We still have an outbuilding, where we were able to reuse the windows, for example.
