My Bosch Logixx 6 washing machine just stopped working with error code 08. That's all I needed! Does anyone happen to know what this error means? Online, it says something like "No signal from the motor tachogenerator." If it's a motor failure, is it worth calling a technician, or should I just buy a new one? 🙁

I think resistance to constant consumption and replacement increases with age.
We could start a competition to see who here uses the oldest mobile phone model (not just stored away). I’ll start with the Samsung Star II, released in 2011. 😳

My dad used the Nokia 3410 until December 30, 2017. He probably still would if we hadn’t brought him a Doro from the electronics store [emoji13]

My Sony Bravia TV has been working perfectly since 2004.... this thing just won’t break so I can finally buy a new one

Those were still circuits back then. The emperor can only dream of that....

By the way, this resistance to buying new things is not limited to technology. My wife and I were flipping through our photo album last night—yes, those still exist—and came across our Portugal Atlantic coast trip from 2013. We smiled realizing that we still look the same as in 2013, and the clothes we are wearing in the pictures not only still fit but are also still in our wardrobe and in use. So, we are the downfall of mail-order companies. Karsten

Ok, I have now ordered this heating element from Bosch for €78. My husband is willing to install it himself. If that doesn’t work, we will buy a new one.
Good decision, if your husband wants to do it, why not. If it doesn’t work out, it’s not a problem—you can get a new one. At least you will have learned something from it.
Personally, I use items and appliances as long as possible or repair them, even though repairs can be quite costly. I find this approach more environmentally friendly.

However, there are also things you shouldn’t keep. Grandma’s old chest freezer, for example—replacing it with a new one is usually worth it. Innovation is indeed limited by excessive durability. Refrigerators, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and dishwashers—these are all items that some people hold onto for 20 years because they still work, but in reality, they are no longer cost-effective.

Otherwise, quality is especially important with washing machines. How can customers recognize that? Is it just because the brand name on it is Miele and it costs twice as much? Unfortunately, they still only offer a two-year warranty—if that’s not a quality guarantee, then what is?

Not because it’s branded Miele, but because it lasts. If it didn’t last, no one would pay the price for the machine. Therefore, I assume it is of good quality.
However, I don’t own one myself to confirm this.

Economically, buying a new appliance only makes sense if the energy savings over its lifetime exceed the purchase price. I mostly doubt that is the case.
Refrigeration units are probably the exception.
