Hello,

I have a question regarding the wall plaster in our basement rooms. Our painter originally plastered our entire house with gypsum plaster from Einza. The packaging states that the plaster is also suitable for damp rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens. The painter said we could use it on the basement walls as well. The walls had quite ugly holes. I applied the plaster there, and only afterward did I learn that gypsum plasters should generally not be used in basements. However, the painter was confident it would be fine since our basement is dry. So far (about two years now), there have been no issues. We painted over it, and everything is still nicely white.

Now, however, I have one exterior wall that looks a bit yellow. For this wall, I would prefer to use a different plaster because of possible moisture. I’m not sure if the wall is actually damp. At least, it doesn’t feel that way.

My questions are:
a) Was it okay to use gypsum plaster in the basement at all?
b) Which plaster should I use for the exterior wall (with a window in it)?

I would be very grateful for any advice!

PS: I have uploaded a picture of a finished plastered wall in the basement and one of the mentioned exterior wall.

So you have a masonry basement, right?

You should apply lime-cement plaster on it.

But honestly: the plastered surface already looks quite rough...
