Hello everyone,

What are your thoughts on security cameras? I am considering installing two outside. I have already looked through the websites of the regional data protection authorities and noted the essentials (notice sign, deletion policy, masking public areas, etc.). The main goal is deterrence and to be informed about what happens when I am away.

Do you have cameras on your property or even more, like an alarm system? What are your reasons for or against them?

Thank you and best regards,

That’s true – but the general contractor can’t just check those off under “extras.”

Consider yourself lucky: neighbors come for free

Shopping baskets and buckets are sometimes used as codes.
No one is home during the day, dog, single woman, and so on. I once saw that in a newspaper.

These markings are called burglars’ signs, chalk drawings or marks on a wall.
Nowadays, sometimes small twigs are simply left at the entrance.

I am allowed to upload my own footage from my own property to the internet without encryption as I wish. Glorious GDPR or not. Neither the GDPR nor any other laws care about that.

Furthermore, most nighttime burglars carry out some kind of reconnaissance before their act, and in this case, an alarm system and/or surveillance cameras can indeed deter the crime at that property.

It might be different with the currently discussed twilight burglars, who usually strike between 3 and 6 p.m. (15-18 hours), when everyone is most occupied with themselves (getting off work, shopping, cooking, etc.). But even then, I believe that alarm systems and surveillance cameras, unless hidden, are more likely to discourage them than having none at all.

There are probably higher-quality dummy cameras as well, which cannot be recognized as such from the outside. Just like with real cameras, that always comes down to money.

No, because doing so violates the intruder’s personal rights. This is not a joke.
On top of that, private individuals are not allowed to start public manhunt appeals.

A much more practical issue is posting pictures of the mail carrier or other visitors online. That is not acceptable at all.

Completely wrong.
This affects both the data subject rights under the GDPR and the right to one’s own image under personality rights.

Your property is not a lawless zone where you alone make the rules. It’s important to move away from this mindset quickly, as it is an excellent breeding ground for extensive neighborhood disputes.

He meant the legal code and the specific section for your statement.

As long as there are no people in it. That should be obvious and has been debated and discussed for years.
