Hello everyone,

What are your thoughts on security cameras? I am considering installing two outside. I have already looked through the websites of the regional data protection authorities and noted the essentials (notice sign, deletion policy, masking public areas, etc.). The main goal is deterrence and to be informed about what happens when I am away.

Do you have cameras on your property or even more, like an alarm system? What are your reasons for or against them?

Thank you and best regards,

Well, TV often suggests that nowadays it’s enough to just install a camera from manufacturer XY, and you can watch everything live in at least 1080p and even communicate with the burglar.
That’s simply amusing.
Suggested greeting: “We’ve been waiting for you for a long time. Glad you’re finally here. The key is under the doormat, go ahead and make some coffee, we’ll be there in 2 minutes.”

Good neighborhood matters too

That’s true – but you can’t just tick that off as an “extra” with the general contractor.

Well, unfortunately, most of the interested parties get their information from TV.

The first request is always: The camera must have Wi-Fi, and you should be able to see everything on your phone, preferably in 4K. Of course, you only want to be alerted if there is really a break-in, not just because a spider spins a web in front of the camera.

Then you explain to the person that this is wishful thinking.

For the camera to have a deterrent effect, it needs to be visible before the intruders are already in the garden. Once they are caught on camera, they just continue anyway.

That makes sense. If it’s an organized gang, the footage probably won’t help anyway. I’m still thinking it over. I ordered windows in RC2N security class. The roller shutters are aluminum. That way, they at least have to struggle a few seconds longer.
We won’t have any valuable jewelry either, so there’s nothing worth stealing. In that respect, there’s nothing to lose. Still, you want to avoid that uneasy feeling that someone unknown was inside your home. Depending on how well the mechanical ventilation system works, all the windowsills will simply be covered with flower pots. At least this way they can’t get in unnoticed at night.

Usually, there is hardly anything valuable to steal in new buildings. Most people are financially drained after building their house. Nevertheless, burglaries still happen, and whatever is available gets stolen.

In our area and the neighboring town, the first burglaries were delayed by a few years. By then, some money is usually available again.
