Hello everyone,
What are your thoughts on security cameras? I am considering installing two outside. I have already looked through the websites of the regional data protection authorities and noted the essentials (notice sign, deletion policy, masking public areas, etc.). The main goal is deterrence and to be informed about what happens when I am away.
Do you have cameras on your property or even more, like an alarm system? What are your reasons for or against them?
Thank you and best regards,
Andrea85

I think you might be expecting too much... because what exactly are you going to do with the picture? Just so you later know that exactly two guys wearing dark blue masks broke in? Meanwhile, you probably spend 99.997% of your evenings watching half-hour summaries of your neighbors' cats sneaking past your house during the day? At least you’ll be able to greet all of them by name quickly.
For "deterrence," a sign saying "Beware of Dog" and a dummy with a blinking LED is usually enough...

Dummy cameras, especially those with blinking LEDs, are clearly recognizable as such and certainly do not deter anyone.
We use the cameras to occasionally check on things and to communicate with the person at the door... or for vehicle recognition to open the gate when arriving home. They also provide information to the phone when away, for example to see that a package has been delivered.
Additionally, they help detect if someone is still on the terrace/garden or in the carport, so the house knows when someone is home.
As for how effective this is as a deterrent, I can't really say; I don't think it actually deters anyone. However, it does provide added convenience.
