Hello everyone,

What are your thoughts on security cameras? I am considering installing two outside. I have already looked through the websites of the regional data protection authorities and noted the essentials (notice sign, deletion policy, masking public areas, etc.). The main goal is deterrence and to be informed about what happens when I am away.

Do you have cameras on your property or even more, like an alarm system? What are your reasons for or against them?

Thank you and best regards,

Usually, there is very little to steal in new builds. Most people are broke after building their house. Burglaries still happen, and whatever is there gets taken.

The absence of valuables (jewelry, etc.) does not necessarily mean that someone is broke. There are simply people who do not place much value on such items. In theory, valuables could have already been purchased before the house was built. I don’t think it’s fair to generalize by saying, “They built new here, so they don’t have money to buy anything valuable.”
But regardless of who, what, where, or how, it is always desirable not to be affected by a burglary. And it’s important to protect yourself against that.

Crazy about the break-ins!
Do you know if they caught them? At least the videos would be good evidence then.

No idea. After the first break-in here, a WhatsApp group was created, but I didn’t join it. I wouldn’t notice anything at night anyway.
The last time it was discovered in the middle of the night that some people were prowling around the houses, the group raised the alarm. One person fell down the stairs while jumping up and running down.

I tend to stick with the "Home Alone method". We have little toy cars everywhere around here.

When it comes to deterrence, the success is hardly measurable. It’s more about feeling personally safer.
This also applies when a break-in actually occurs. There is usually nothing of value to take, and if there is, it’s insured, but I don’t think I would feel comfortable in my home anymore after a break-in.

For data protection reasons, I would rely only on good quality equipment and make sure to understand the technology! If the recordings (even just from your own property) are accessible unencrypted on the internet, it becomes an issue under the GDPR, and you definitely don’t want to deal with that kind of trouble.

Exactly. It’s mainly about personal preference.

And that’s true as well—you need to familiarize yourself with the technology. So, have CAT7 cables installed at the desired locations.

I don’t understand? With very poor quality, there are 1) fewer data available that you 2) even need to protect…
If the recordings (even from your own property) are accessible unencrypted on the internet, this is a case for the GDPR, and nobody wants that kind of trouble.

What does the General Data Protection Regulation have to do with it if I intentionally or unintentionally put my own data online? Exactly—nothing! Or are you afraid that your own dog or child might sue you?

In our area, the break-ins happened around the time when all the neighbors close all their roller shutters around 7 p.m., effectively securing their houses. At that time, no one notices anything anymore, and the burglars feel unobserved.

I have already considered whether a 500W LED floodlight might be more effective for deterrence instead of cameras.
