Thanks for your help.

A regional tip from the Elbe:
At our modern house, we used a rustic facing brick from a small, historic Hoffmann kiln brickworks in the region – the last one on the Elbe (Rusch Klinker, model "Elbmarsch"). Back then, these brickworks (once 130 in total) supplied half of Hamburg. Today, there are long waiting times, since this is not mass-produced.
Each brick is unique, irregular, and some show clear signs of coal firing. It looks beautiful in person and stands out positively in the new development area due to its natural harmony, in my opinion.
Efflorescence appears more or less on all the bricks (especially on the roll-molded bricks used as window sills, which, however, are more attractive and quieter than aluminum sills). Using a brush over time is gentler than the quick acid treatment.
A much larger regional manufacturer on the Elbe is Glückstädter Klinker.

That is not really an option at this point. What is the reason for that?

Overall, I found very little information on clinker bricks / facing bricks to prepare myself. What exactly are you preparing for? Are you dreaming of doing the installation yourself (which I would not recommend at all if you are inexperienced)?

but even then honest information was rare. What kind of “honest” information are you looking for? They are rectangular blocks and come in colors ranging from cream white to black violet...

We source the facing bricks through the building materials supplier used by the developer. There is a wide range of manufacturers available, but we cannot get used bricks from them.
It is certainly an option to source the bricks ourselves and then have the cost reimbursed, but we would only consider this if we cannot find anything suitable through the supplier.
Am I overestimating the decision regarding the choice of brick itself? Otherwise, our decision would be based solely on appearance.
The preparation and information available were focused on the different manufacturers. I have absolutely no idea how the various bricks differ, what advantages and disadvantages the different manufacturing processes have, and what points we should pay attention to when purchasing aside from the appearance.

Facing bricks are generally not optimized for thermal insulation but for weather resistance, making them primarily an aesthetic building material. Color variation can be achieved in two ways: by mixing batches from different production lots and by intentionally creating irregularities during firing (e.g., using flame treatment or similar methods). Fundamental surface differences can be produced through hand molding, sand application, or similar techniques.
In my opinion, the recommended format is the "standard size" (NF); regional sizes that are not aligned with the modular dimension are correspondingly more difficult to lay.
Unfortunately, one must say that the overall impression’s quality often suffers nowadays due to careless workmanship — the issue of improper joint finishing by less skilled workers has been discussed here several times recently (search term: joint smooth finishing - https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/fassadenmangel-moertelreste-und-verschmierungen-mangel-oder-nicht.25932).
Installing a facing brick veneer is an often underestimated, labor-intensive task. Simply put, if the additional cost sounds surprisingly low, the result will likely reflect that price accordingly.

Thank you for your detailed response.
I hope and believe that we won’t encounter any issues during the installation process. I have heard that in some areas of Germany it can be quite difficult to find suitable companies to carry out these jobs. However, this is hard to imagine in the areas around Bremen. It feels like 8 out of 10 houses here are finished with facing brick.
Both the masonry work and the pointing are carried out by staff who are directly employed by the construction company and perform this work on a weekly basis.
We have now scheduled an appointment with a building materials supplier to explore various options. Afterwards, we will try to get reference addresses, because you can’t really tell what the final effect will be from sample boards (as shown in the attached picture). Maybe by then we will also have the chance to choose the next step – the joint color.

Afterwards, we will try to get reference addresses Yes, as a layperson it’s easy to misjudge the overall effect. In your sample panel photo, the joints all seem too thickly filled to me. It’s better to get reference addresses where the same contractor worked—so not from the building material supplier with a different contractor.

Maybe then we will also have the chance to decide on the next step—the joint color. In my opinion, the joint color should be considered "within the system": taking into account the color of the roof tiles, window frames, and window sills.
