Hello everyone =)

I would like to have my stairs and railings renovated, but where or how should I get this done best?

I prefer railings made of stainless steel and stairs made of granite. There are 4 floors that I want to make look a bit more modern, as we are currently renovating the house...

What would be a rough cost estimate? And which companies would you recommend to contact for a quote, since there are so many out there.

Best regards =)

At the moment, they look like this:

Hello!

If you plan to renovate, I would suggest starting with the radiators.

Otherwise, I would estimate around 5,000 euros per floor. Of course, using a particular type of granite can significantly increase the cost.

Personally, I wouldn’t consider that much money worthwhile. It might be better to just improve the existing staircase a bit and spend the rest elsewhere – but THAT’s just me being broke.

Regards,
Tom.

PS. Chances are someone will offer you such a staircase very cheaply – and then put it together just as cheaply.

You gave me a great idea =)

So, I’m going to remove the red bars (cut with an angle grinder) and then sand off the paint with a sanding machine.

Or

I’ll put a stainless steel tube over it (a slightly larger diameter). I’ll see how many bars there are (because of the cost per stainless steel tube)... maybe I’ll remove every second green bar as well...

Possibly weld a few thin stainless steel rods across as well (not sure yet).

The blue-colored part is just a theory for now... It looks like this (not well edited, sorry).

It might be that I just make all the green bars look like stainless steel, and that’s it =) (simpler solution and probably the best one).

Only now I don’t know how to do the handrail =(
I don’t want to keep the black (rubber-like) one anymore.
You suggested doing it with wood (sounds great),
but how should I manage that? (Because of the bending).

I would be very grateful for a tip =)
Of course, I’ll post a before and after picture in the end.

Best regards =)

Hello!

What a mess! I felt like I had written 17 pages, and now I’m getting an error message from the system...

Everything’s gone!

And what might a stainless steel railing of this size cost?
If it turns out to be expensive, I’ll probably just paint it.

Hello!

That’s a bit hard to answer—you would need to get some quotes. If you don’t have a friend with some weekend free time, the official route probably won’t be cheap—anything under 1,000 euros per floor would pleasantly surprise me; 2,000 euros seems more realistic.

The photo isn’t very clear; if you want something a bit more modern, maybe the following could work:
1. Cut off the “ornamental” parts—Cost: 10 euros
2. Roughen up, prime, and “paint with a stainless steel look”—Cost about 100 euros
3. Upgrade the handrail: remove the black plastic and then get creative—e.g., wrap with wood, stick or screw on stainless steel, or maybe something with acrylic?—Cost: ?

The material isn’t expensive; the stainless steel for my railing cost me 300 DM back then—it was for a basement staircase.

Tom.

I don’t know what your profession is or if you even understand what you are suggesting here. You can’t just cut parts off a cantilevered staircase railing like that. The railing certainly has a structural or load-bearing function. So please avoid such suggestions that could cause serious problems for others.
Only a structural engineer or, at most, a master stair builder can take responsibility for such things.
