Hello everyone,

I want to soundproof the wall to the neighboring apartment in my bedroom against airborne noise coming from there.
The area is about 12 sq.m (130 sq.ft), with a wooden floor and decorative plaster on the ceiling.

I have already done some research and I think it will come down to something like a secondary stud wall with 50mm (2 inches) metal studs, mineral wool insulation, soundproofing boards such as Kn*** Diamant, and so on... My question is:
Who should I contact? A drywall contractor? I want to make sure the measures are effective and that I won’t regret later that, although the work was done neatly, the wrong system was chosen for my situation.
Should I start by consulting a building acoustics expert?
My concern is that someone might claim to know what they are doing, but in the end is just trying to fill their order books – if you know what I mean. Right now I still have all options open and want to be certain that the best possible method and implementation are chosen.
Thank you!

Measure with caution!
The project may lead to an improvement, but it is not guaranteed.
What matters is how and where the sound is transmitted. It could be through the wall or through the floor slab, or even both.
If the transmission occurs, for example, through the floor slab, wall insulation might be almost ineffective.
However, it is also possible that wall insulation will achieve the desired effect.

I would initially consult an independent expert who can provide advice. The costs are likely to be lower at first, and then you can decide on the next steps. Unfortunately, I don’t know whether it’s possible to measure where the sound originates, but overall, this approach is probably better than proceeding without information.

Try googling soundproofing mats for engine compartments. You will find products originally used in shipbuilding. If you attach these to your walls and cover them with drywall (plasterboard), it becomes very quiet. Seriously. For example, Aixfoam. Karsten
