Doc.Schnaggls4 Dec 2014 12:01Hello,
In our basement guest room / office, there is a wastewater pipe running from the ceiling down to the floor slab in one corner. We have sound-decoupled PVC waste pipes installed.
We would now like to build a drywall enclosure around this pipe and additionally insulate it. This pipe carries wastewater from the kitchen sink and dishwasher.
Our question is:
How should we treat the space between the drywall and the pipe:
- Fill it with mineral wool?
- Use a “soundproof sleeve” around the pipe? Where can such a product be found?
- Use other insulation materials?
We appreciate any advice.
Best regards,
Dirk

Does no one have any ideas on this?

The most important thing is that sound cannot be transmitted directly. ==> Wrap the pipe (with a cover, fleece, or similar material) to prevent contact! Otherwise, only mass helps, meaning to encase it in masonry. Alternatively, rebuild it using (preferably thick) drywall.
Good luck

In the kitchen, we wrapped the soundproof pipe with mineral wool, 15mm OSB, and a 10mm gypsum fiberboard. This setup works so well that after completion, I sometimes thought we had only enclosed a ventilation pipe for the water line.
However, I probably wouldn’t have put in this much effort if this construction, apart from the mineral wool, hadn’t been necessary for other reasons.
In the pantry, we have a wastewater pipe, which we simply boxed in with OSB and drywall... it makes quite a bit of noise when someone is washing up upstairs. But it doesn’t bother us since it’s the pantry.
