Hello everyone,

we are currently finalizing the selection for our bathroom fixtures and are still undecided about the washbasin. We had initially chosen the Scalido WTSC65WS washbasin based on its appearance, without knowing the price. Our plumber then commented, "you might as well buy a washbasin from the hardware store." Well, Scalido seems to be a relatively new brand—I couldn’t find much information about it—and the price at just under 170€ (about $185) is definitely on the low end. However, compared to the washbasin from Laufen, which costs about four times as much, we simply prefer the look of the Scalido.

Has anyone had experience with Scalido? How big of a risk am I taking with the cheaper washbasin? If necessary, I’m prepared to consider it a learning expense of 170€ (about $185).

Under the product number, I find a washbasin. Did you mean that, or are you referring to a piece of furniture / base cabinet?
The washbasin is made of sanitary ceramic. I don’t think there’s much that can go wrong with it if you like the look.
It would definitely be different with the furniture.

The basin is made of sanitary ceramic; I don't think much can go wrong if you like the design.
It would be a different matter with the furniture, though.

I meant the basin, sorry, I wasn’t clear.
Not sure why the word "washstand" has a link—that wasn’t me.
I also think there’s not much that can go wrong. Of course, taste is always subjective.

Sanitary ceramics are usually very hard and easy-to-maintain materials. In many old bathrooms from the 1970s, you can find very cheap washbasins, and while everything around them has become outdated (probably the washbasin too), there is still nothing to criticize about the quality of that piece even after 50 years.
Maybe the plumber said something like that because he sells you the parts and would prefer to earn a bit more?

I might consider taking the plumber at their word and ask if they would also install supplied materials. That way, you could get something "better" from the hardware store or Ikea. But most likely, they will refuse...

He won’t. We’re working with a general contractor, and the plumber earns the difference between his cost price and the recommended retail price from the bathroom studio. But when I see how cheap various branded sinks are online, that €175 (about $190) sink from Scalido can’t be that bad. This is one of those building decisions where you end up wasting way too much time and thought.
