Hello,
we built in a new development area where the roads had not yet been properly constructed.
Our construction company poured the foundation slab relatively high (about 50cm (20 inches) higher than the other buildings). The driveway paving was not included at that time. We hired a paving company to install the driveway. Now that the local authority has started road construction, it turns out that our driveway cannot be connected to the road. The driveway is about 15-20cm (6-8 inches) too high. The paving company wants to adjust the driveway for €2000. But is this reasonable? Shouldn’t the construction company have aligned with the other houses and coordinated with the local authority regarding the road? I was never asked to provide any documents related to the road. Does anyone have experience with this?

?

What kind of road was it if not a proper one?
What was it made of? Was it clear from gravel or sand that a tradesperson could tell that some work was still ongoing, in whichever direction?
If your house was built 50cm (20 inches) above the standard level, what did the paver base their work on? The front door, garage, or entrance platform? Presumably, they accounted for the appropriate slope, so now only a 20cm (8 inches) difference needs to be managed?

I find 2000 generally a bit much – in our new development area, the street pavers took care of our connections individually, often happy to do so in exchange for a crate of beer at the end of the day 🙂

The road is a temporary construction access road. The asphalt surface is very thin, with many cracks and uneven edges. Unfortunately, I can’t describe it any other way. The paver aligned with our front door and also built in a slight slope. However, he now wants to remove about 40cm² (6.2 square inches) from an approximately 80cm² (12.4 square inches) driveway.

I believe the design was done incorrectly, which caused the costs to be much too high. I am willing to pay for adjustments, but not $2,000 for something that was already known beforehand. The edge finishes were also fully cast in concrete. On one hand, that is good, but knowing that there will be a road added later makes it unnecessary.

Known, yes, but only to you.

I still consider the price for the 40m² (430ft²) reasonable. That would probably result in a proper finish.

He can also just redo the first meter (3ft). That would be about 6–8m² (65–86ft²) and therefore lower costs. However, then you’d have a bend at the front of the driveway and about a 20% slope on that first meter. That’s not ideal for your car or a wheelchair.
