Hello everyone,
I would like to replace the facing bricks in our covered outdoor area with new facing bricks. The new facing bricks are about 0.5cm (0.2 inches) thinner than the ones currently installed. However, I need to maintain the same overall height with the new bricks.
Now to my question:
The substrate has deteriorated over the years and is quite crumbly in some spots. I’ve attached a picture. This means that when removing the old tiles (which were installed very securely), parts of the screed come off in places, but the rest is still solid. Since I will be tiling using the thin-bed method, I cannot use tile adhesive to fill these uneven areas.
I came across a leveling compound from QuickMix that can be applied in thicknesses from 2 to 60 mm (0.08 to 2.4 inches). Do you think I can simply prime the uneven substrate with a bonding agent and then pour the leveling compound?
Second question:
As you might barely see in the picture, the substrate is more extensively damaged at the corner of the step. I assume I cannot use the leveling compound here either. Can I simply place a formwork board and refill the screed in this area without it breaking away again shortly after under the new tiles?
I would be very grateful for your help.
