ᐅ Renovation quote for a 7 m² bathroom

Here in East Frisia, I have received an initial offer from a local heating and bathroom company. It involves a complete demolition and reconstruction of a bathroom from the 1990s. All fixtures will remain in their original positions. The company manages the project from start to finish.

I find the many details reassuring. At first, the price was surprising, but perhaps it can be reduced by choosing more affordable materials. Next week, we will visit the company to discuss the specifics, such as sanitaryware, bathroom furniture, tiles, etc.

I am considering getting a quote from another company for comparison. What do you think about this offer?

Tiling seems a bit expensive to me (but it could also be the market situation). The rest are typical contractor prices. So, not super cheap but also not really expensive.

For the shower, it would also depend on the specific set, as prices range from 250 to 2000 EUR (approximately 270 to 2150 USD).

In many places, it says "up to 12.5m² (135 sq ft)." I’m not sure if this refers to the maximum prices for a bathroom that size, and since our bathroom is smaller, the final quote should be lower. That’s something we need to ask about.

Especially for tiles, the surface area to be tiled is usually specified. That means both floor and wall areas! This is very important! You don’t want to have a misunderstanding about this.

About a year ago, we also had our bathroom renovated. It was somewhat smaller (6 sqm (65 sq ft)), but included a new ceiling with recessed lighting and underfloor heating. In our case, the vanity was significantly larger, and the other fixtures were a bit more expensive, for example, a shower tray with non-slip surface, a large mirrored cabinet, a shower system with overhead showerhead, and the bathtub was also a very high-end model. Our quote was around 27,000 EUR.

The work was carried out this year, but we are still waiting for the final invoice. Therefore, I can’t say exactly yet whether we stayed within budget. However, many items in our quote were based on time estimates and billed according to actual hours worked. These estimates turned out to be quite accurate overall.

Thanks to working from home, I was able to closely track who did what, when, and how long it took.

If you have the time, definitely get a second quote. We didn’t because we know the plumbing company and some of the staff personally, so we felt fairly confident that they would do a good job—which they ultimately did. We also knew that we had chosen some rather expensive fixtures, so the price didn’t come as a complete surprise.
