Hello!

Here in East Frisia, I have received an initial offer from a local heating and bathroom company. It involves a complete demolition and reconstruction of a bathroom from the 1990s. All fixtures will remain in their original positions. The company manages the project from start to finish.

I find the many details reassuring. At first, the price was surprising, but perhaps it can be reduced by choosing more affordable materials. Next week, we will visit the company to discuss the specifics, such as sanitaryware, bathroom furniture, tiles, etc.

I am considering getting a quote from another company for comparison. What do you think about this offer?

About a year ago, we also renovated our bathroom. It’s a bit smaller (6 sqm (65 sq ft)), but we had a new ceiling including recessed lighting and underfloor heating installed. Our washbasin was significantly larger, and we chose some more expensive fixtures, such as a shower tray with anti-slip surface, a large mirrored cabinet, a shower system with overhead showerhead, and the bathtub was also a very costly model. Our quote was 27,000 EUR.
The work was carried out this year, and we are still waiting for the final invoice. So I can’t say for sure yet if the costs matched the quote. However, many items in our quote were based on estimated effort and settled according to actual work done. These estimates were quite accurate overall.
Thanks to working from home, I was able to closely follow who did what and how long it took.

If you have the time, definitely get a second quote. We didn’t, because we know the plumbing company and some of the employees personally, so we were quite confident the job would be done well (which turned out to be true). We also knew we had selected some rather expensive items, so the price didn’t come as a big surprise to us.

Interesting, thanks. Is the underfloor heating water-based or electric? How do you like it?

Did you make any advance payments?

The underfloor heating system uses water. We never paid anything in advance. However, shortly before completion, we received and paid an interim invoice for 15,000€ (about 15,000 euros). At that point, approximately 80% of the work was completed, so that was acceptable. We are still waiting for the final invoice.

12 m² (130 ft²) for around €21,000
This is an affordable price

We were in a similar bathroom, but without a bathtub, instead with a significantly larger washbasin, a bigger shower, and rectified tiles in a comparable area (Cologne). There were no advance payments, but two progress payments. Especially with tiles, the price per square meter for the tile installer is important; the tiles themselves do not make up a large part of the total cost. Getting a second or third quote is important, and having a plumber “around the corner” is extremely helpful in case any problems arise.
