Hello everyone,
I asked our builder about the cost of installing appropriate burglar resistance for the windows on the ground floor.
I was given the following options and prices (a total of 10 windows of different sizes):
1. Laminated safety glass (VSG) on all ground floor windows and patio doors: €3,649.24
2. P4A (anti-throw) laminated glass on all ground floor windows and patio doors: €2,154.22
3. WK2 fittings on 6 window sashes on the ground floor: €429.65 (excluding fixed glazing, not technically possible for lift-and-slide doors)
I now have a few questions:
1. What exactly is the difference between laminated safety glass (VSG) and P4A laminated glass? Do I understand correctly that VSG glass is also resistant to throwing attacks?
2. What would you recommend in terms of price-performance? Of course, I do not want to compromise on security.
3. We can also add lockable windows for €139 per window. Are lockable windows worth it? That would be for 10 more windows.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Christian

With all the discussion about which makes more sense—stronger glass or something else—how often does a thief actually break a windowpane in a densely built area? (Just google how many percent of burglaries involve breaking a window pane...)
A more practical solution is the "WK2 fittings" (or nowadays RC2N), which basically provide more mushroom-shaped locking cams and prevent the window from being pried open. Lockable windows are not necessary; the version with a turn knob is sufficient. The main point is that the mechanism cannot simply be turned from the outside. Keys still have the disadvantage that they either stay attached to the window (not ideal) or have to be constantly searched for or left lying around. This needs to be carefully considered if you decide to use keys and how you want to handle it.
The knob version was included in the price; the fittings for the ground floor cost around 400-500€ (about 400-500 USD). On the upper floor, these fittings are only needed if the windows can be easily reached via a roof or similar structure.
@Bauexperte: While reading my post, I just realized that we wrote basically the same thing.

Hello everyone,
Thank you for the detailed explanations. Everything is clear now.
Payday: The hardware fittings were already decided for me. I just wanted to understand the situation regarding the glazing. I will discuss with my better half what exactly we want to do there. She definitely needs a greater sense of security, even though break-ins due to glass breakage are quite rare.
With that, the topic is settled for me. Thanks to everyone involved.
Almost sunny greetings from Aachen,
Christian
