DARRENHello everyone, I am planning to safely transport some Malm furniture from IKEA for my upcoming move and have noticed that the surface is quite sensitive to scratches and impacts. So my main question is: how can I best protect Malm furniture during transport to avoid damage? I am particularly interested in which protective materials work best, how to handle parts that can be disassembled, and if there are any special tips for protecting corners and edges. I look forward to your advice and experiences!
Hello DARREN,
First of all, it's a good idea to protect the Malm furniture from transport damage – their coated surfaces are really prone to scratches and chipping. Generally, I recommend disassembling the furniture as much as possible, for example, removing drawers and shelves to reduce weight and secure movable parts.
Thick blankets or special furniture covers work very well as protective materials because they absorb shocks and prevent abrasion. It’s best to secure the covers with ratchet straps or ropes to ensure nothing shifts during transport. For edges and corners, foam padding or edge protectors made of foam rubber are excellent, as they prevent localized dents.
If you wrap everything in plastic film (e.g., stretch wrap), you avoid moisture and additional scratches. However, be careful not to stretch the film too tightly, or the coating might get damaged.
Summary:
- Disassemble furniture if possible
- Protect with soft blankets/furniture covers
- Use foam edge protectors
- Wrap additionally with stretch wrap
What materials are you currently using, or do you have something specific planned? 🙂

Hello DARREN,
I fully agree with Ianlau and would like to add a few points: Especially with Malm dressers and tables, which often have a lacquer-like finish, you should be careful with sharp edges during transport.
I definitely recommend packing the drawers separately because otherwise they can easily fall out and get damaged during transport. You can also line them with newspaper or bubble wrap beforehand to provide extra cushioning.
A common mistake is moving or placing heavy furniture directly on hard floors – if possible, put soft paper or cardboard underneath to avoid scratches on the underside.
Also, be careful when loading the van: always place heavy items on the bottom and lighter ones on top. Avoid pushing items together unnecessarily, as this often causes pressure marks.
I hope this helps you.

Hello DARREN,
I want to provide you with a structured guide on your topic “Protecting Malm Furniture During Transport – What Should I Watch Out For?” that I often use myself:
1. Preparation
- Completely empty the furniture and pack all movable parts (drawers, shelves) separately.
- If possible, fully disassemble furniture pieces; collect and label screws and small parts carefully.
2. Protection Against Surface Damage
- Wrap furniture with especially sensitive surfaces first in soft blankets or furniture fleece.
- Corners without edge protection are weak points; apply foam edge protectors to the corners or wrap them with padding tape.
3. Packaging
- Wrap furniture pieces in stretch film to protect them from moisture and dirt.
- Avoid wrapping the film too tightly, as this can cause pressure marks.
4. Transport in the Vehicle
- Place the heavier parts on the bottom and position them so they cannot shift.
- Use stoppers or padding between the furniture to prevent movement.
5. Common Mistakes
- Placing furniture directly on hard floors without padding – this causes scratches.
- Not securing drawers, which can be lost or damaged during transport.
In summary, besides the points already mentioned, I recommend also looking for suitable materials, such as edge protectors from DIY stores and furniture fleece, which works well for furniture.
I can only confirm this – that investment is definitely worthwhile.
Do you already have a list of materials you want to get? If not, I’d be happy to offer you a small shopping guide.
