Hello dear home builders!!

We have now received our building permit / planning permission and excavation will start next week.
What happens after excavation before the foundation slab is poured?
Is there anything I should pay attention to so that I don't forget anything or my excavation contractor doesn’t forget to mention something?
Thank you very much for your help!!

According to the geotechnical report and structural calculations, a frost protection layer should be installed and compacted before laying the foundation pipes and the base slab. Your subgrade should be protected from moisture and must not be unnecessarily loosened.

If you work with a general contractor, they handle all the work independently and take full responsibility. Avoid walking on the gravel more than necessary (as the homeowner, ideally not at all). If you have an expert inspector, they will check everything at the appropriate time.

Before excavation, soil replacement takes place. Excavation is basically just digging a trench. This trench needs to be deep enough to ensure the building’s frost protection (80 cm (31.5 inches) deep without a basement).

After pouring the foundation slab (filling the trench and the interior with concrete), you can check the external dimensions to make sure they match the agreed contractual specifications. Also, measure across once—the slab dimensions are usually indicated on the construction drawings.

If all else fails, the area will be filled in again and grass will be seeded. 😎
