ᐅ uPVC Windows vs. Windows with Aluminum Cladding

Good day everyone,

We currently have an offer from a general contractor. The calculation is based on standard uPVC windows – colored on the outside, white on the inside.

The additional cost for windows with an aluminum cladding on the outside – while keeping the inside white – is €3,800.00.

Now we are wondering: should we go for it or not? Where is the added value here?

In my opinion, there is hardly any visual difference when the windows are color foil wrapped on the outside. uPVC windows are just as easy to maintain, aren’t they?

Are they competitive in terms of price
They were among the most expensive window quotes I received. However, the price increase from white/white to colored/white was only between 10 and 15%. 35 square meters (sqm) (including one lift-and-slide door) with electric roller shutters and installation cost between €28,000 and €31,000 (colored/white), security standard RC2N.

Can they compete on price with typical manufacturers like Internorm?

Since I find several other manufacturers equally good for white windows and Gealan is, as far as I know, unique for colored windows—so comparing them would be like comparing apples and oranges (then it would be with foil-covered windows)—I can’t really provide a direct comparison here. Personally, I prefer fair prices and tend to exclude discount suppliers. Internorm is one of the manufacturers where I believe their production volume justifies the price. However, I haven’t held products from all manufacturers myself to have a fully informed overview of the market. Even as a manufacturer, I was only interested in customers, not competitors. I was involved in the decision to become a dealer rather than remain a manufacturer, but shortly after that the company closed—unfortunately, I was brought in too late, and business consulting is a craft, not magic.

We are renovating our house built in 1977 and want to do everything only once, so we chose aluminum windows from Schüco AWS90 SI, with DB703 on the outside and white on the inside.

It was VERY difficult to obtain these AWS90 SI windows. Apparently, all metal fabricators/window companies only offer the AWS75 SI version (at least where I live in Lower Saxony).

Since we are renovating in stages, we first replaced the windows on the upper floor. We sourced the hard-to-get AWS90 SI windows from Austria, had them delivered, and our local metal fabricator installed them.

Now we have the problem that the company in Austria still offers these windows, but our special color DB703 is no longer available, and the AWS90 SI windows can only be ordered from a certain minimum square meter area.

The issue is that for the front door and the remaining windows on the ground floor, we have to use the AWS75 SI, as we cannot find the AWS90 SI anywhere else!

The AWS75 SI will be installed in the basement.
