ᐅ The plastic waste bin keeps tipping over.

I need a quick idea on how to secure my yellow bin against strong gusts of wind. The plastic bin is just too light, and the gusts regularly tip it over, spreading the trash across the property. Yes, I know, a bin storage shed would help, but I’m not going to get one and set it up quickly right now.

I’ve already tried leaning stones against it, but the leverage is just too small. Tying it down? Hammering iron nails into the ground on all four sides?

I’m going away over the holidays, and my wife will be alone here. I don’t want to burden her with having to constantly go outside and put the trash back in.

I would appreciate a few quick, smart ideas.

Do you have tent pegs and some string? Maybe you could quickly hammer them into the ground and tie something secure to them. Otherwise, I can’t think of anything else. Or put a few heavy stones at the bottom of the bin. But you would have to remove them before the next emptying, which I probably wouldn’t do. I would be too afraid of forgetting.

Well, especially since we have a 240-liter (63-gallon) barrel, by the time I get down there, I’ll probably have hurt my back or be hanging upside down in it.
We once got some ground stakes, but I think we used them all for my wife’s tomato greenhouse. If it’s still standing, we probably owe that to them.
I still have 60 meters (197 feet) of string, but I’m not sure yet how or where to tie the barrel. Maybe just to the fence post.

Do you have any Euro pallets lying around to lean against it? Bin -> EPAL pallet -> stones? Then secure it from two sides?

Place bricks or paving stones (1, 2, or more) on the cover.
An old paving slab also works.

I consider this a poor structural solution – if I want to prevent it from tipping over, the weight needs to be applied at the bottom.

Isn’t it possible to secure the piece somehow? To a post or something? That would be the simplest solution and also easy to undo...
