Hello community,
My wife and I are currently planning an extension to my parents’ house. We are currently living there in a 40sqm (430 sq ft) granny flat, which is to be expanded through the extension.
The plan is for a two-story L-shaped extension, with the L of the second floor being used as a balcony.
The extension should be approximately 120sqm (1,290 sq ft) without a basement. The heating system of the existing house was recently replaced and was designed with enough capacity to cover such an extension.
We are considering building the extension using the interlocking block system (Variant / Styrostone / etc.) and to carry out almost all construction work ourselves. The interior work (electrical / heating / plumbing / etc.) is also planned to be done by us personally.
We have already sought advice and received an offer from a structural engineer.
The offer itself amounts to about 5,500€ net for design phases 1/3/4/8.
Now to our questions:
- Are there any experiences with building using interlocking blocks?
- How realistic are the manufacturers’ claims of completing one story per week?
- Can the shell construction costs be roughly estimated based on the information given above?
- Is the price for the architectural services reasonable?
- What else should we expect or prepare for (in any respect)?
Best regards,
Christoph
