We are planning to install recessed spotlights in all bedrooms. There are different opinions regarding the number needed. The bedroom measures approximately 16 m² (4x4 m / 13x13 ft). The plan is to use spotlights with a beam angle of 45 degrees and a light output of 50 watts per spotlight (of course, an energy-saving alternative with similar light output). Typically, the distance between the spotlights should be about 1 m (3 ft). In this case, that would mean 9 spotlights. What do you think? Would 4 or 5 be enough?

Hello,

9 x 50 W as general lighting will definitely illuminate the room; four spotlights will not be enough for this purpose—but they are sufficient as accent lighting. Especially in the bedroom, you usually don’t want continuous full illumination, so subtle lighting is preferred. A series circuit might be suitable here; with one switch position for bright general lighting and another for more subdued lighting. Dimmable spotlights could be another option.

For selecting and distributing the lamps, it is advisable to get professional advice at a specialty store.

[Watt in this case refers to electrical power; brightness is given as luminous flux. If you want to use an energy-saving lamp instead of a 50W halogen lamp, for example LEDs, you need to pay attention to the luminous flux specification. When in doubt, simply compare the values provided on the packaging.]
