Hi everyone,

I am very inexperienced on this topic.
We want to build next year, and the construction specifications include several Cat 7 connections.

What can they be used for?
Are they just for telephone and TV?

Where is it useful?

Best regards,

According to Wikipedia, CAT7 refers to network cables. The purpose is apparently to be able to operate a computer with a network connection in every room, independent of Wi-Fi.

Cat7 outlets are standard LAN sockets. Much more important, however, is whether empty conduit pipes are installed. The rest can then be retrofitted if necessary.

What about a patch panel? Is there any mention of that anywhere?

The construction specification states that the patch panel must be installed by the builder in the utility room. (I think)

So, the patch panel is definitely the builder’s responsibility.

But what exactly is the patch panel then?

Simply put, this is a cabinet where all the Cat7 cables terminate. However, it is still uncertain whether Cat7 cables and, more importantly, empty conduits are actually installed. So far, I have only seen mention of Cat7 sockets.

The sizing and especially the cost of the patch panel and switch depend on the number of Cat7 sockets. Double sockets (a socket with 2 LAN ports) naturally count twice. The internet connection can still run through an inexpensive router that is simply connected to the switch.

Here is the quote from the construction specification:

The workroom and children’s room each receive a data outlet socket Cat.6 with a Cat.7 connection cable for connecting computer devices. The connection cable ends in the utility room. Purchase and installation of a patch panel are to be done by the homeowner as a DIY task.

So that would be 3 rooms in total!!!
