ᐅ Neighbor thinks the air-to-water heat pump is too noisy

Hello and Happy New Year to you all.

Here is the situation: our neighbor just came by to complain that our heat pump is too loud and runs continuously. The outdoor unit of the heat pump is located behind our house. On the property line, the neighbor’s garage is behind the heat pump, and our garage is next to the heat pump, forming a sort of narrow passage or corridor. The neighbor’s house is diagonally across from this setup.

He said he constantly hears a humming noise. What do you think could be done to reduce the noise somewhat?

To understand this, you first need to know whether the "problem" lies with yourself or rather with the other party.
The moment you say, "Okay, let's take a look at the issue with my heat pump," you have admitted fault to 99% of people.

Sound events (the fundamental tone and overtones) propagate and are therefore never absolute; they are perceived differently at different locations (I refer only to real effects, not to imaginary concerns about future ex-partners of the neighbors). The event can become a problem at the source, the "outlet," or anywhere along the path between.
In principle, it seems reasonable—regardless of the other person’s mindset—to first acknowledge problems and make resolving them a joint effort. Peaceful coexistence consists of three parts: 1. You, 2. Me, and 3. the "and" in between. Difficult people exist, probably nowhere as a critically endangered minority group, but that should not influence any guiding principles.

Very well put.
Assuming the worst about a neighbor right away is “Trumpism” in its early stages. That this only becomes noticeable now may be due not only to changes in technology (wear and tear, malfunction) but also to changes in how the house is used (e.g., setting up a home office in a room that was previously rarely used).

I can say that the neighbor is not all there anymore. As others have already mentioned, I told the neighbor that I turned off the heat pump once, and he said it didn’t make any humming noise, even though the heat pump was still running. He has only been complaining since last summer, ever since he saw the unit.

Since we’re planting a hedge behind the house anyway, so the neighbors won’t be able to look onto our property anymore, that should settle things down. By the way, he is the only neighbor from the apartment building who can hear it; none of the others hear anything remotely close.

That is already an important insight and actually happens quite often. There are many similar examples from other professional fields as well...
You might as well drop a brochure for a psychosomatic clinic in his mailbox 🙂

very, very cool! You made my day!!

It’s like my neighbor’s ex! As soon as she was gone, the pump wasn’t an issue anymore^^

Did you clarify it with him or tell him it was still running^^

I wouldn’t say that directly to the neighbor... but rather mention once or twice that you turned off the pump again. If he then nods and says he noticed it, after the third time or so, about an hour after he acknowledged it, I would go to him and say... your partner just told you that she turned the pump back on that day as well because she didn’t know you were running a test 😉 😉.
