Hello and Happy New Year to you all.

Here is the situation: our neighbor just came by to complain that our heat pump is too loud and runs continuously. The outdoor unit of the heat pump is located behind our house. On the property line, the neighbor’s garage is behind the heat pump, and our garage is next to the heat pump, forming a sort of narrow passage or corridor. The neighbor’s house is diagonally across from this setup.

He said he constantly hears a humming noise. What do you think could be done to reduce the noise somewhat?

We installed a new air-to-water heat pump at the end of December and were surprised at how quiet it is. Ours is positioned at the corner of the house, allowing it to disperse noise freely in almost every direction.
The air-to-water heat pump is currently running at full capacity continuously due to electric underfloor drying.

The neighbor across the street only noticed the unit was running after I mentioned it to him, a few days after it was started up.

When standing about 6m (20 feet) away—that’s the distance to the street—the heat pump is only audible if you really listen carefully, even at full load. Birdsong, rustling branches, and the fountain at the other neighbor’s house are all noticeably louder.

So, I would assume that the noise level depends heavily on the year of manufacture and the specific model.

With your username, one might assume it means "aid" or "help"!
Or maybe you should consider changing your username now? 🙂

Therefore, I would assume that the noise level depends strongly on the year of construction and model, among other factors.

That’s also my biggest hope after deciding on a recent Vaillant air-to-water heat pump, which is supposedly the quietest on the market.

Which manufacturer and model is it?

I have a air-to-water heat pump myself, and yet I’m not as narrow-minded as some people writing here… No one should disturb their neighbors with their heating systems to the point where they get annoyed! Such a humming noise can ruin your whole enjoyment of life, so sit down with your neighbor and find a solution together…

You have to first determine whether the "problem" lies with yourself or more with the other party.

The moment you say, "Okay, we can take a look at the issue with my heat pump," you have admitted fault to 99% of people and will be reminded of it repeatedly. My advice, therefore, is to be cautious—being stubborn has nothing to do with it.
