ᐅ My KALLAX shelf has small cracks on the surface – is this normal?

Hello everyone,
A few months ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, and recently I have noticed fine cracks on the surface. These cracks are mainly on the panels, so they do not go all the way through to the core material; they are rather superficial.
My question is whether this is normal for a KALLAX, meaning if the material is known to develop such fine cracks over time. I have used the shelving unit exactly as recommended and have not overloaded it. Temperature and humidity were also constant, with no unusual conditions.
Has anyone experienced something similar, or could this possibly indicate a manufacturing defect? I would be very grateful for any advice on prevention or repair!

fine cracks on the surface of a piece of furniture you can buy at the furniture store for quite little moneyHaha, yeah, that’s true, Connor, but you know, everyone wants such a piece to look good for as long as possible. It’s like with shoes – of course, they wear out, but with a little care, they last much longer.
And honestly, a small crack here and there isn’t the end of the world. A bit of wax, handling it gently, and you can enjoy it for years.
Don’t worry too much, we’ll manage it all! ;-)

Do not place the shelf near radiators or windows with strong sunlight exposureThank you, I think that’s a good tip. My shelf is not directly next to a radiator, but there is a window nearby where strong sunlight comes through during the day.

It might be a slight manufacturing variance in the materialI had considered that as well. These fine cracks can also be caused by stress in the material, even with normal use of the shelf.
I will try the suggestions involving furniture wax and move the shelf a bit away from direct sunlight. Perhaps that will help reduce the issue somewhat.
Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice!
I just wanted to quickly say: It’s really great that you’re taking such good care of your KALLAX, Mefrank!
It’s hard to believe how small factors like temperature and sunlight can have such a big impact on furniture. 🙂
I hope the cracks get smaller with the measures you’re taking and soon won’t be noticeable anymore.
Feel free to keep us updated on how things progress!

If you notice the condition worsening or the cracks getting larger, it would be advisable to contact IKEA customer service.
Sometimes they offer goodwill solutions for issues that are not caused by misuse.
