Hello everyone, I have a small technical question that's been bothering me: My KALLAX shelf, which has been standing in the same place unchanged for a while, suddenly feels noticeably unstable. It’s not on uneven flooring, nor has it been moved or subjected to any stress. Still, I notice it wobbles or shifts more easily when I bump into it. Does anyone know this issue or have an idea what could cause such instability without any external influence? I haven’t noticed any changes in room humidity or temperature so far. The main loads on the shelf have also remained the same. I would appreciate any advice or troubleshooting steps.

First, check if any screws or connectors have come loose. Often, it’s the connections that need tightening.

An interesting case that may have more causes than initially apparent. Even if the KALLAX remains untouched, small changes in the surroundings or material alterations can affect its stability. The shelving unit is made of engineered wood panels, which can respond to moisture—even if the room’s air humidity has not noticeably changed.

I recommend the following approach: First, check all the connection points and screws, as mipau already suggested. Even if you think nothing has moved, slight vibrations or natural settling can loosen connections. Another point is the floor: measure the level at the placement spot with a spirit level. It’s possible that the substrate has settled slightly or that dust deposits have formed, causing the unit to no longer stand flush.

Additionally, temperature fluctuations in the room can cause the wood panels to change. For example, is the shelving unit placed near a radiator or an external wall? Even small cracks or swelling at the joints can contribute to some instability.

It would also be helpful to know how heavily the unit is loaded and whether the weight distribution has remained even. Sometimes weights shift when items are rearranged, which can affect stability.

My final advice: tighten the screws a little, check the floor, monitor the load, and if necessary, use small wedges under uneven areas. If possible, consider adding or securing a back panel to the unit—that significantly increases stability.

Did you assemble the shelving unit yourself? If so, it’s also worth verifying that all parts are properly fitted. If you like, I can provide more detailed guidance on that.

It sounds like you’re dealing with a real construction situation. Small issues can quickly add up and become worrying, especially when you suddenly feel that a shelf is unsafe. I had a similar experience, and it does feel strange when something you thought was sturdy starts to wobble for no apparent reason. It’s great to see so many helpful tips here – checking the fixing screws and the surface it's on is definitely reassuring.

Maybe it will also ease your mind to know that these phenomena are quite common and usually easy to fix. Don’t let it stress you out – most of the time it’s a minor issue rather than a major problem.

Exactly. Simply check and tighten all the screws. Often, the plastic stoppers on the feet are shifted or worn out, which can be easily replaced. Then the shelf should stand securely again.
