Hello everyone, I have a somewhat special request: After heavy use, my IKEA KALLAX shelf shows some dull spots in certain areas, especially on the shelves and edges where items are frequently moved around. The surface looks a bit rougher and worn, and I suspect the paint or finish is slightly damaged or worn off in some places. Has anyone had experience with how to best repair such dull areas without completely changing the look of the shelf? I’m looking for a solution that is as simple as possible to carry out, without major restoration work. I would appreciate any tips on materials, methods, or even replacement products if that would make more sense.

Hey Iainra, I’ve had a KALLAX for quite a while too, and yes, the surface definitely wears down with frequent use. You can treat small scratches or dull spots with some fine furniture wax or special polish designed for lacquered surfaces. Just apply a thin layer and gently buff it in – this usually refreshes the surface quite well. Keep in mind: don’t use too much, or it will get sticky. And to be safe, test it on an inconspicuous area first. Good luck! 😉

In addition to Trate47’s suggestion, I recommend cleaning the surface with a very fine sanding pad (grit 400 or finer) to remove dust and light contaminants before applying polishing agents. This helps the wax adhere better and ensures a more even finish. Products designed for lacquered furniture based on polyurethane work well since KALLAX usually has this type of finish. Important: Never sand too aggressively, as this can worsen the damage.

If the dull spots are a bit deeper, polishing compounds originally meant for cars can also work well on lacquered furniture. These are often fine enough and easy to apply in controlled amounts. Afterwards, apply furniture wax as recommended to protect the surface. Always test first on an inconspicuous area. If you have the time and interest: after polishing, very gently sand the surface with fine sandpaper (e.g., 600 grit) and then seal it with wax for a completely renewed feel.

I can understand why the dull spots bother you. Especially with furniture you use a lot, you want it to stay looking as nice as possible. In my experience, sometimes you just have to accept that signs of use are part of it, but if it really bothers you, the tips here will definitely help. Try the gentle wax method first and see how it feels. And don’t worry if it’s not perfect—this can always be refreshed again.

Apply furniture wax or polish and rub it in well. That's all you need.
