Hi,

this morning I wanted to make some muesli and was horrified to find moths in it. Where do they come from, and more importantly, how can I get rid of them in the kitchen?

Thanks, I hope you can help

Hello!

I know that problem! But it wasn’t just the case with my cereal; the common flour moth had also infested my flour before I wanted to bake a birthday cake for my mother. What I noticed is that temperature plays a big role in this. So, you should store your food well away from heat and steam!

In my case, they were in the hay. They prefer fatty products like nuts, and they love paprika powder. You can usually tell if something is infested by moths because there are fine cobwebs in the food that catch dust. I also control them using these moth traps. The infestation has decreased significantly since we started keeping the hay in the sunroom, and now there is only one rabbit left anyway...

I know that feeling! We now store everything in these Lock&Lock containers, so something like that shouldn’t really happen. Or you would notice if a moth flew out of the container.

That sounds really awful. I’ve never heard of anything like that before, not even among people I know.

We once had a fly infestation in the kitchen after a vacation. There were maybe 50 to 80 flies in the room, which we mostly let out the window.
But then it continued, with 10 to 20 flies at the window every morning. Over and over again.
We searched all the cracks and it turned out that there was a piece of fruit under the trash bin (yuck) with maggots next to it. Interestingly, there was also another spot in a different corner of the room, where apparently nothing else was around except a sheltered spot.
When we vacuumed up these two “nests” (thank goodness for that invention! 😀) and cleaned everything thoroughly, thankfully the problem stopped.
There was nothing in the food storage.

But: definitely really disgusting. I can’t even imagine what it’s like when everything in the drawers is crawling with insects.

Does no one here have a heart for Mottenhausen?
