Hello everyone,

My Malm bed has been creaking repeatedly whenever someone moves on it. The noises mainly occur when lying down or turning over, and sometimes when getting up. I have already tried tightening the screws, but that only helped temporarily. It is a standard wooden Malm bed frame with a slatted base.

I suspect that the wooden joints have loosened a bit or maybe the contact surfaces between the slatted base and the bed frame are causing the problem.

Has anyone experienced this issue? What are effective and practical ways to permanently stop the creaking? Are there specific maintenance methods or suitable lubricants you would recommend? Or is it better to replace certain parts?

I look forward to your tips and advice!

Tightening the screws is often the first step, but as you have noticed, the squeaking can still persist.

The cause is usually friction between wooden surfaces or between wood and metal. I recommend thoroughly cleaning all moving joints first to remove dust or wood shavings.

After that, you can apply a dry lubricant such as graphite or a specialized silicone spray to the contact points. Please avoid using oil or grease, as the wood may absorb it, making the area sticky.

If the squeaking comes from the slatted frame itself, it is also worth checking the support pads. These can sometimes harden or slip, causing noise. Replace or reposition them if necessary.

In summary:

1. Tighten the screws
2. Clean the joints
3. Apply dry lubricant
4. Check the support pads

Let us know if this improves the situation for you.

Hold on, people tend to be too conservative here! The usual tightening and lubricating is often just a superficial fix.

What many don’t consider: Malm beds are not designed for continuous heavy use with frequent movement. Creaking can also be a sign of simple material fatigue. Instead of tedious re-lubricating, I would rather suggest adding targeted reinforcements — for example, additional metal brackets or strips to stabilize the bed.

In my opinion, efficient means addressing the root cause — not just alleviating symptoms. Anyone who values quiet should not just retighten screws on a Malm bed but consider modifying or reinforcing the bed frame. Anything else is — sorry — an endless cycle of squeaking.

Tighten screws properly.

Apply silicone grease or graphite powder on contact points.

Check rubber supports and replace if necessary.

This is usually sufficient.

A more precise approach would be as follows:

1. Systematically check all screws and connections and tighten them with a torque wrench (not too tight, but secure).

2. Inspect the contact surfaces between the slatted frame and the bed frame for cracks, uneven wear, or missing support pads.

3. For wood-on-wood connections, it is advisable to treat the contact points with graphite powder. Alternatively, fine sandpaper can be used to lightly roughen the bearing surfaces, which helps reduce noise.

4. Replace defective or hardened rubber buffers.

5. Optional: Metal brackets or small braces can be added to stabilize the structure if no more screwable connections can be tightened.

It is important not to use oily or greasy lubricants, as these can cause long-term damage to the wood.

If the bed is older and these measures do not help, replacing the most stressed parts is the most sensible option.

Exactly! But sometimes the root of the problem with the bed is a stubborn issue. I would recommend a combination of tightening and dry lubrication – then add a good mattress, and the nightly squeaking concerts should quiet down. 😉

Sometimes a simple trick is enough: placing a piece of felt or felt pads at the contact points can work wonders. This prevents friction and thus eliminates the annoying squeaking.

Give it a try, and you'll have a good night’s sleep ahead!
