ᐅ MALM bed squeaks despite regular maintenance – what can be done?

Hello everyone,

I have a MALM bed from IKEA that, despite regular maintenance and tightening of the screws, has started to squeak quietly over the past few weeks. The problem mainly occurs when moving or pressing the bed in a certain direction. I have already tried tightening all the connections and checked the support points to prevent any floating joints. However, the noise persists.

My question to the community is: What can I do if the MALM bed continues to squeak despite multiple inspections and maintenance? Are there common weak points or specific techniques to fix the issue permanently?

I would be very grateful for any tips or shared experiences!

I would first treat all connections with a dry lubricant.

Then, check all screws again and tighten them.

Usually, the issue is caused by one spot that isn’t fully secure.

MALM bed squeaks despite multiple rechecks

Here is a deeper insight: Based on my experience, the Malm series often uses so-called minifix connectors combined with wood screws.

These connectors are convenient for assembly but tend to be sensitive to movement, especially when tensile forces are involved or if the slatted frame is not perfectly fitted.

Step by step, I would check the following in your case:

1. Loosen the minifix fittings, apply a small drop of beeswax or wax stick, and reinsert them.

2. Slightly loosen the screws and apply a dry lubricant such as PTFE spray to all contact points between wood and metal, provided it is compatible with wood.

3. Check whether the slatted frame rests securely without slipping; if not, use thin rubber pads.

4. Tighten all screws with the correct torque, as overtightening can also cause damage.

5. Verify that the floor is completely level; if needed, compensate with small washers or felt pads.

Please update us on how it progresses or if you have more details about the exact bed configuration.

Hey nonru,

nothing is worse than that annoying squeaking when you’re trying to fall asleep! 😄 I’d also suggest treating the screws with some wax and taking a look under the slatted frame.

Sometimes the slats rub or catch on the side rails, which is easy to miss. A bit of felt or even a cut-off wool sock placed where the parts contact each other has saved me more than once.

Keep at it, you’ll get it fixed! 🙂

Treating mini-fit fittings with wax

Good addition from Ernesto! I would like to add:

When using wood glue, be careful not to apply too much, as wood glue can sometimes create stresses during curing if the joints are not precisely aligned.

It can also help to slightly clamp the bed frame while tightening the screws, so all parts fit closely together before the screws fully fix them in place.

For the felt, I recommend using as soft a type as possible that does not introduce additional stress.

This way, you will be able to eliminate the squeaking step by step.
