Hello everyone,

I’m facing the following issue: I have a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea at home, which is about 77 cm (30 inches) tall. Recently, I installed a new carpet in the room, which is quite thick—around 2 cm (0.8 inches). Since then, the Kallax feels comparatively too low in relation to the rest of the furniture, especially when trying to put larger items in or take them out.

My question to you is: Is it practical and possible to raise the Kallax using so-called risers, meaning basically spacers or feet mounted under the existing legs? Are there any experiences regarding stability, safety, and appearance? Or would you rather recommend a different solution, like buying entirely new furniture feet or modifying the furniture itself?

I would appreciate it if you could share your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hello naimfe,

First of all, a clear answer: yes, this is generally possible and is also commonly done.

The main issue with Kallax is that the furniture is relatively lightweight and not designed to withstand leverage forces or uneven loads. So if you add risers or similar underneath, you should consider a few points:

1. Stability: The risers should be as wide and slip-resistant as possible. Small, narrow feet could make the shelf unstable or cause it to tip when leaned on.

2. Attachment: It is advisable to either screw the risers on (if possible) or at least secure them firmly with a strong adhesive or hook-and-loop fasteners. Without a secure connection, the feet could slip.

3. Appearance: There are special furniture risers available in various heights (2-4 cm (about 1 inch)), which are quite discreet and can enhance the look of the furniture.

4. Alternative: You can also buy new furniture feet, for example made of wood or metal, which can be attached directly to the existing screws. This often looks neater and provides more stability than simply using risers.

Summary: Adding risers under the Kallax is possible, but safety and durability should be considered. It definitely makes sense on thick carpet, allowing you to adjust the furniture to the ideal height.

If you like, I can also recommend manufacturers that offer suitable feet for Kallax.

If your Kallax is too low, screw-on furniture legs are the best solution. Simple, stable, and visually appealing. Furniture stilts can be wobbly, especially if they are too narrow.

I would also recommend new supports. Stilts can be unstable. Look for solid wooden feet or metal feet; you can find quite a few options online.

Ah, the classic Kallax feet question 🙂

I once upgraded my shelf with delicate furniture legs, and voilà—I could finally reach the stuff inside without doing a headstand!

Sure, stilts usually work, but in my experience, real, attractive furniture legs simply look better and give your Kallax that extra style point 👍

Plus: on a thick carpet, you get more stability this way. Stilts on the thin edge often feel wobbly. Just buy some nice wooden or metal legs, install them, and you’re good to go!

And yes, I admit I’m a big fan of DIY furniture upgrades 😉 😄

Exactly! I did that myself and I'm really happy with it! I simply screwed on the feet and raised the cabinet by 4 cm (1.5 inches). It looks very stylish, and the thick carpet is no longer an issue.

If you decide to do this, it’s best to use feet with a large base to avoid any wobbling. Don’t worry, it works great and really makes a difference! 😃
