ᐅ Kallax too low after carpet installation – Are risers an option?

Hello everyone,

I’m facing the following issue: I have a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea at home, which is about 77 cm (30 inches) tall. Recently, I installed a new carpet in the room, which is quite thick—around 2 cm (0.8 inches). Since then, the Kallax feels comparatively too low in relation to the rest of the furniture, especially when trying to put larger items in or take them out.

My question to you is: Is it practical and possible to raise the Kallax using so-called risers, meaning basically spacers or feet mounted under the existing legs? Are there any experiences regarding stability, safety, and appearance? Or would you rather recommend a different solution, like buying entirely new furniture feet or modifying the furniture itself?

I would appreciate it if you could share your tips and experiences. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for all the advice so far!

One additional question: Are there specific dimensions or screw sizes I should consider if I want to attach new furniture legs directly to a Kallax? I want to make sure I don’t buy the wrong legs that won’t hold properly or could damage the shelf.

I’m also interested in whether it’s better to use legs with rubber or felt pads, especially because there’s carpet underneath. I want to avoid the legs sinking into the carpet or the shelf becoming unstable.

Looking forward to your expert tips!

Good point, naimfe. For the Kallax, I recommend legs with M8 screws or alternatively legs that fit standard furniture leg mounting plates. It’s important that the screws are at least 3–4 cm (1¼–1½ inches) long to ensure a secure hold without damaging the shelf material.

Rubber feet are generally more stable on carpeted floors since they don’t slip or sink in like thin felt pads. Look for legs with a wide, rubberized base to better distribute pressure and provide stability.

In summary: use screws of sufficient length, secure mounting, and wide rubber feet for carpet—that works best.

I understand well why this topic is on your mind. You do feel a bit uncomfortable when a piece of furniture suddenly looks “too low” or becomes impractical.

Maybe it helps to look at your experience from a different angle: Imagine the Kallax got new legs and suddenly everything fits much better, no more tripping hazards when pulling items out, and even the room feels more harmonious.

These small adjustments often make a big difference in everyday life. So go ahead and give it a try – with the tips here, you’re in good hands! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything works out.

Just briefly: I simply used sturdy threaded furniture legs that were screwed onto the bottom of the Kallax unit. No risers. This worked perfectly on thick carpets and is very durable.

If you don’t want to drill holes, coasters can also work, but be cautious about stability. Otherwise, just mount legs and that’s it.
