Hello everyone,

I recently treated my KALLAX shelf with furniture polish to refresh the surface. Unfortunately, the shelf has become quite slippery – you can really feel how the surface is smooth and almost greasy now. I’m wondering how I can get rid of this unwanted slipperiness without damaging the wood or the finish. Does anyone have experience with furniture polish on KALLAX or tips on how to effectively and gently remove slipperiness? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Furniture polish does not work well with KALLAX

That’s a good point you bring up. However, I just wanted to refresh the surface a bit because the color looked a little dull. The KALLAX is quite old and, as you correctly pointed out, it’s not solid wood. It is more of a melamine coating. So my question is a bit more specific: Are there any polishing or care products that are particularly suitable for KALLAX or similar surfaces? And how can the issue with the slipperiness be solved now without sanding off the finish?

Use neutral cleaners without waxes or silicones on melamine. Afterwards, wipe with a dry cloth to remove slipperiness. Polish is not ideal for KALLAX.

Hello Tarri,

I understand your concern that a slippery surface can be frustrating. Furniture polish often contains waxes or oils that not only make melamine surfaces shiny but also greasy and slippery. My experience:

- First, try cleaning thoroughly several times with lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap.
- If you want to clean further, use a mild solution of water and a few drops of vinegar to remove wax residues. Be careful not to use too much vinegar.
- Avoid using degreasers as they may damage the surface.
- Allow the shelf to dry completely until the surface feels normal again.

The important thing is to be patient! Some residues only disappear after several cleanings. If this does not help, gently sanding the surface with very fine sandpaper (e.g., 400 grit) in an inconspicuous spot can restore some texture, but only as a last resort.

One more tip regarding slipperiness: After cleaning, rub the surface thoroughly with a dry microfiber cloth. This not only removes any polish residue but also improves grip. Good luck!
