Hello everyone,

I recently treated my KALLAX shelf with furniture polish to refresh the surface. Unfortunately, the shelf has become quite slippery – you can really feel how the surface is smooth and almost greasy now. I’m wondering how I can get rid of this unwanted slipperiness without damaging the wood or the finish. Does anyone have experience with furniture polish on KALLAX or tips on how to effectively and gently remove slipperiness? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Tarri,

Your issue with the slippery surface after polishing is unfortunately quite common. Furniture polish often leaves a thin layer that feels especially smooth on KALLAX shelves – usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating. Here is my structured advice:

1. Remove excess polish: Gently wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth to eliminate residues.
2. Clean with a mild all-purpose cleaner to restore some grip to the surface.
3. If that’s not enough, use a microfiber cloth with a bit of isopropanol (test first in an inconspicuous spot) to break down the greasy residues.
4. After cleaning, wipe with warm water and let it dry thoroughly.

Important: Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as they can damage the coating.

I hope this helps you!

Wipe off polishing residues with warm water and dish soap. Then let dry thoroughly. This usually helps immediately.

These recommendations are based on scientific evidence: solvents dissolve the oily layers of the polish that cause the slippery surface. It is important that the surface does not swell or get damaged. Therefore, test in an inconspicuous area before use.

Oh, I know that problem! After I once polished my KALLAX too much, I found a really simple solution: wipe it with a damp cloth and then rub it several times with a microfiber towel. This removes the excess polish, and the surface feels natural again. 🙂 Good luck!

Honestly: furniture polish on KALLAX? In my opinion, that doesn’t fit together. These shelves are not high-end solid wood furniture that requires polishing. Using such a polish only risks effects like this. My advice: stay away from it and instead use special products designed for melamine-coated surfaces. There are plenty of options that don’t become slippery and offer better protection.
