ᐅ KALLAX shelf slightly crooked after moving – will it straighten out again?

Medushko3424 Aug 2024 19:32Hello everyone,
I set up my KALLAX shelf unit after moving, and I noticed that it doesn’t stand completely straight but appears slightly tilted. It’s not level and wobbles a little when I move it slightly. I assembled the shelf carefully, following the instructions exactly, and checked the floor multiple times – it seems flat and without significant unevenness.
My question is: Do the wooden components and the shelf unit tend to straighten out on their own after standing for a few days or weeks? Or should I adjust it now (for example, tightening screws or taking other measures) to prevent it from remaining permanently tilted or getting damaged?
Has anyone had experience with slight tilting of a KALLAX shelf unit after assembly, especially in the context of moving?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hello Medushko34,
First of all, a very clear and precise question that already includes important details. This makes it easier to provide a targeted answer.
The KALLAX shelf is made of engineered wood panels, which are relatively stable but not flexible – they usually do not warp over time, especially if they are already slightly crooked. This means that a permanent tilt is usually due to the following:
1. Uneven floor: Even if your floor appears level, minor unevenness can cause the shelf to twist or rock. It is advisable to measure carefully using a long spirit level or a digital inclinometer.
2. Assembly: Screws and joints must be fully tightened. With KALLAX shelves, there is little tolerance in the wood panels; they rely on precise assembly. Even 1-2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) of play can lead to visible unevenness.
3. Load distribution: If the shelf is already tilted right after assembly, check whether the weight is evenly distributed. An uneven load can increase the perception of tilting.
Regarding whether the shelf corrects itself over time: Usually, the panels do not straighten out on their own if slightly tilted. Any changes could be caused by moisture if the furniture is placed in a damp environment, but this would be unwanted and not a solution.
My suggestion: Make sure the floor is truly level and use furniture pads or small shims for fine adjustment if needed. Tighten all screws and check angles and frame with a good spirit level. If it still does not fit properly, a minor adjustment during assembly might help.
How did you measure the floor, and have you already checked the shelf with a spirit level?
This wobbling indicates a small unevenness at the bottom, which can be compensated with slight padding.

In addition to the previous tips, I would like to emphasize the following points:
1. KALLAX shelves are made of coated particleboard, which cannot compensate for deformation. Self-adjusting after becoming uneven is therefore technically impossible.
2. A slightly uneven installation can be corrected using the included leveling feet or external furniture legs. It is advisable to place a small felt or plastic pad under each shelf foot to make fine adjustments.
3. The slight wobbling you describe indicates that the floor is not completely level. When in doubt, installing a small wedge at the affected spot is often the simplest solution.
4. Tightening screws does no harm but does not guarantee against unevenness—the hidden cause is usually the base.
Regarding long-term stability: If the shelf is permanently uneven, uneven loads and tension forces develop in the material, which can lead to material fatigue or damage.
My advice: A stable, level base is the fundamental requirement. Correcting with shims is the best way to ensure long-term stability.
I fully agree with this.
