Hello everyone, I am planning to get a KALLAX shelving system from IKEA and am considering whether I can use it in the garden as well. My main question is: Does the KALLAX warp when exposed to rain or high humidity if left outside without protection?
I know the material is actually intended for indoor use, but has anyone had experience with how stable the shelf remains in wet conditions? I am especially interested in information about deformation, swelling of the material, and durability under such circumstances. Thanks in advance!

That’s great that you want to use the KALLAX outdoors! 🙂
I’ve had mine on the terrace for a while now, though it’s under a roof, but it has still gotten some rain. The shelf has warped slightly, but nothing serious. The important thing is: the more often it gets wet, the more the material will expand and contract – that’s normal!
I would recommend definitely treating the shelf with clear varnish or a weatherproof wood stain. That way, you can get much more life out of it. Good luck with your project!

Here is a brief guide on how to use KALLAX outdoors:
1. Preparation: Lightly sand all visible surfaces, especially edges.
2. Treatment: Apply at least two coats of exterior wood varnish, allowing each coat to dry completely.
3. Installation: Place the shelf unit elevated if possible, for example on legs or a base, to prevent it from sitting directly on wet ground.
The shelf will definitely warp without protection because MDF and particleboard absorb moisture. Using varnish can significantly extend its lifespan. Additionally, you should strongly consider using a cover to keep rain away.

The KALLAX is not designed for outdoor use. That’s very accurate, but I’d like to add some technical details: KALLAX is made from coated particleboard or MDF. The surface is usually covered with melamine foil, which provides short-term protection against light splashes of water.
With prolonged exposure to moisture, the core material absorbs water very quickly, causing swelling that can lead to warping and surface delamination. Changes in temperature and humidity further accelerate this process.
If you plan to use the shelf outdoors, I strongly advise against leaving it unprotected. Applying a suitable wood preservative treatment, as described by PRA64, is essential. Additionally, it’s worth placing the shelf in a covered area with good air circulation.
The technical properties of the MDF and particleboard materials used in KALLAX inevitably cause swelling and warping when exposed to moisture.
Without protection and appropriate treatment, long-term use outdoors is not advisable.
Preventive measures are therefore essential: sealing with water-repellent coatings, protection from direct rain, elevated installation, and regular inspection.
A roof or canopy for protection is always beneficial. It is recommended to use KALLAX indoors only.
