Hello everyone,

I am planning to paint an IKEA Kallax shelf unit with furniture lacquer to achieve a smooth, durable finish. My main question is: How long-lasting is the effect of such a treatment when the shelf is used regularly? I am especially interested in how well the lacquer adheres to the smooth melamine resin surface, whether it is advisable to sand or otherwise prepare the shelf beforehand, and how resistant the lacquer layer is to scratches, moisture, and general wear.

Has anyone had experience with Kallax treated with furniture lacquer and can share how long the coating lasts or whether it might even improve the shelf’s stability or maintenance properties? Thanks in advance for your tips!

On Kallax, furniture paint only adheres well if you sand and clean thoroughly beforehand.

Furniture paint is relatively resistant, but no coating is indestructible.

So: Sand + optionally use a primer, then apply the paint directly.

It’s great that you want to enhance your Kallax with furniture lacquer! :-)

I did the same about six months ago and I’m still very happy with the results! I sanded everything well beforehand and then applied two coats of furniture lacquer. Since then, the shelf looks much more refined, and small scratches really don’t appear! Of course, it’s not completely indestructible, but it holds up really well in everyday use and can even be cleaned easily with a damp cloth.

So: make sure to sand thoroughly and don’t apply the lacquer too thinly. That way, you’ll enjoy it for a long time! Good luck with your project!

Exactly, without sanding the paint barely adheres to melamine.

I also recommend using a special bonding primer designed for plastic or melamine.

After that, you can apply several thin layers of paint, allow each to dry, and lightly sand between coats to improve adhesion of the next layer.

This ensures long-lasting durability and good protection against moisture and scratches.
