Hello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and want to place it on a slightly thicker carpet. Unfortunately, the unit isn’t completely level, which becomes inconvenient with multiple shelves and the storage compartments. The unevenness causes the doors not to close properly and makes the unit wobble slightly.
I’m especially interested in which solutions or adjustments you would recommend to stabilize and level the KALLAX despite the carpet underneath. Are there any special feet, spacers, or other tricks you have successfully used?
It’s important for me to find a solution that isn’t too complicated, doesn’t cause permanent damage to the unit, and still improves its stability.
Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

I’m familiar with the issue of using KALLAX on carpet; mine isn’t completely level either, and sometimes it’s annoying because it wobbles a bit. I hesitated at first because I was afraid of damaging something or making the shelving unit uneven.
I think it’s great that you’re looking for solutions that protect the shelf while still working well. Maybe it would help to use small wooden shims under the feet that you can cut to size. I was skeptical about this too, but it turned out to be pretty easy to adjust.
How thick is your carpet approximately? That can sometimes make a big difference in whether the shelving unit gives slightly or quite a lot.

Hello Gaukin,
There are some technical aspects to consider when setting up KALLAX on carpeted flooring. First of all, it’s important to know what type of carpet you have: a thin velour or a high-pile carpet? High-pile carpets can cause the shelf to wobble more, especially if it’s not resting evenly.
A practical solution is to use adjustable furniture feet. These can be installed under the shelf legs to precisely compensate for unevenness. For example, there are feet with a screw mechanism that can be adjusted in height without damaging the shelf.
Alternatively, you can use a solid wood or MDF board as a base, which you level carefully. Besides that, a carpet gripper or non-slip pad on the bottom of the feet can help prevent slipping.
I have two questions: What is the height difference you measure between the feet? And are the shelves themselves heavily loaded? This significantly affects the stability and choice of solution.

Technically, the KALLAX shelf on a carpet with an uneven surface should be adapted using suitable support beams or feet to prevent long-term material deformation.
I recommend using height-adjustable shelf feet with a rubber base. These allow precise adjustment and prevent pressure being applied to individual points. Such feet are available in hardware stores or furniture accessory shops and are easy to install.
If this is not an option, a sturdy plywood board can be placed under the entire shelf. It is important that the board distributes the load evenly and that no gaps form underneath the unit, as this could compromise stability.
Important: Before installation, the height of the support feet should be measured to ensure even alignment.

It is important that the feet are stable and compatible with the KALLAX. There are special furniture glides with threads that can be screwed into pre-drilled holes, ideally with a metal plate as a base.

A stable multiplex board placed under the entire shelf...This solution is often the simplest, especially if the shelf is not moved frequently. The board can be cut to size and fitted with felt pads to prevent slipping on the carpet. This ensures a flat surface.
I just wonder whether, in your case, the carpet thickness and furniture weight might also affect the stability of the shelves. Do you fill the compartments heavily or more lightly? That would also be relevant for choosing the most suitable adjustment.
