Hello everyone,

I hope someone here can help me. Some time ago, I bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, which is really practical and looks nice. However, now I have a problem: After cleaning my windows, I wiped the shelf with a damp cloth—and now the finish is peeling off in some spots! The discoloration isn’t very large, but it’s clearly visible that the surface has been damaged.

I didn’t spray the cleaning product directly onto the shelf; I only used a damp cloth, and I didn’t rub it hard or anything. Still, the finish came off.

Is it possible that the KALLAX surface is that sensitive to moisture or cleaning agents? And most importantly: What can I do now to repair it or at least prevent it from getting worse? Does anyone have experience with this, maybe even repair tips?

Thanks in advance for your help!

That sounds like an issue with the surface. Try wiping the shelf only with a dry or very lightly damp cloth, without using any cleaning agents. For repairs, you can try covering the spots with a colored furniture marker.

Hello Pichen69,

It’s good that you didn’t spray the cleaning agent directly onto the shelf. However, even small amounts of solvents or harsh ingredients in cleaners can damage the surface. KALLAX shelves usually have a thin foil coating that is water-resistant but not completely chemical-resistant. If the color is already peeling off, it is likely the foil or the finish layer.

Here’s what you can do now:

1. Avoid any further moisture on the surface and use clean microfiber cloths without additives.

2. For repair, you can try furniture repair kits designed specifically for laminate or foil coatings. Sometimes simple furniture touch-up markers help to conceal small spots.

3. If the damage is larger, replacing the affected shelf sections or covering them with decorations or storage boxes might be a good solution.

I would also recommend avoiding harsh cleaning agents near KALLAX in the future, as sensitive surfaces can react quickly. Instead, use gentle household cleaners suitable for laminate or just water.

If you like, I can also find links to suitable repair kits for you. 🙂

I would like to add: The surface of KALLAX is a melamine resin coating, not paint in the traditional sense. The surprising thing is that contact with certain solvents or abrasive cleaners can cause the surface to dissolve, creating the impression that the paint is peeling off. But it is actually the protective layer that is being damaged.

My advice: Controlling the type of cleaning agents used is essential. If you cannot replace the shelf, covering it with heat-resistant self-adhesive film or using acrylic or paint markers in the matching color is the most practical solution.

However, it is important to check exactly which cleaning product was used—some contain aggressive ingredients that should definitely be avoided.

Furthermore: In general, furniture repair on film-coated surfaces is often only cosmetic; a true repair of the surface is rarely achievable. Careful handling of moisture and cleaning agents from now on is therefore the best protection.
