ᐅ Is it true that the KALLAX cannot be disassembled after assembly?

Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, and afterwards I heard a discussion saying that once assembled for the first time, the unit should not be taken apart again because it would become unstable or even get damaged. That confused me a bit, as I might need to move the furniture, so being able to disassemble and reassemble it would be practical.

My main question is: Is it true that you cannot take apart a KALLAX shelving unit after the first assembly without causing damage? Is there a risk that the wooden dowels loosen or the connections get damaged in some other way? Or is this more of a myth that keeps being repeated?

I look forward to informed answers, preferably from people with experience or knowledge about the construction of the KALLAX shelving unit.

Thanks and best regards!

The KALLAX shelf can definitely be disassembled. Unscrew the fasteners and carefully separate the components. The wooden dowels fit tightly, so you’ll need a bit of patience when taking it apart.

If you plan to disassemble the shelf frequently, get some replacement wooden dowels.

In short: it’s possible, but avoid quick or forceful movements to keep everything stable.

Hello! 🙂

I completely agree with nanidra about the “IKEA secret code.” Sure, you can take the KALLAX apart, but it’s not quite like Lego where everything always fits perfectly.

The wooden dowels are somewhat of a weak point. If you pull them out instead of unscrewing, it can cause damage. Taking the shelf apart and putting it back together 2-3 times is usually fine and not a big deal. But after about five times, it can become wobbly.

One more tip: when reassembling, feel free to use a simple wood glue – it often makes a big difference and won’t cause harm if you don’t do it too often.

Other than that, KALLAX holds up well, just requires some care and patience. Good luck with moving it! 🙂

Thanks to everyone for the helpful and sometimes very detailed answers!

This now sounds much more realistic, and my plan to disassemble and reassemble the KALLAX for the upcoming move seems feasible – of course, I will remove the screws and avoid using any force.

Knowing that the wooden dowels can be replaced relatively easily and that glue can be used as a stability enhancer is very useful information.

I will also get some spare dowels when I have the chance, just to be on the safe side.

Thanks again, you have eased my concerns and given me great advice!
