ᐅ KALLAX used as a room divider wobbles significantly on carpeted floors – any solutions?

Hello everyone,

I recently set up a KALLAX shelf from Ikea as a room divider in my living room. The divider is standing on a relatively thick carpet, and unfortunately, the shelf wobbles quite a bit when bumped or lightly loaded. It seems like the base isn’t stable enough due to the soft flooring.

So my question to you is: What options are there to make a KALLAX shelf more secure and stable on carpet so that it doesn’t wobble when used as a room divider? I don’t want to make major modifications or screw the shelf to the wall, as I want to keep flexibility.

For example, can special feet or pads be used? Or does anyone have personal experience with stabilizing it effectively on carpet?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I think all this fiddling with furniture pads and base plates is just a symptom. Ikea shelves are designed for flat, stable floors, and with carpet, you’ll always have to deal with some degree of wobbling.

It might be a step back in thinking, but instead of placing the shelf as a room divider in such an unstable way, you should consider whether another piece of furniture or a different room divider might be better suited for carpeted floors.

Just as a suggestion: If you really want to keep the KALLAX, then your best option is probably to secure it firmly to the floor or at least support it against the wall. Otherwise, it will likely always feel like a wobbly temporary solution.

It would also be important to know:
- How thick is your carpet?
- Do you use a carpet underlay or runner?
- Is the shelf free-standing or close to a wall?

Thanks in advance for all the feedback! The answers are very helpful as they present different approaches.

To your questions, TEBILO: The carpet has a pile height of about 15 mm (0.6 inches), so it’s not ultra thick but not thin either. There is a thin foam carpet underlay underneath to prevent the carpet from slipping.

The shelf is free-standing in the room, about 30 cm (12 inches) away from the wall. I didn’t want to lean it against the wall to keep the room layout truly flexible.

What kind of underlays or boards would you recommend from your perspective? Are there materials that work better on top of foam underlay and carpet than others?

Hello megigu,

Thank you very much for the additional information! With a 15 mm (0.6 inch) pile height and a foam underlay, it can indeed happen that the KALLAX shelf wobbles significantly because the soft base amplifies minor unevenness.

I would recommend using a combination of stable, flat-acting materials:
- First, a hard, preferably thin wood or rigid foam board (e.g., MDF or plywood, about 6-8 mm (0.25-0.3 inch) thick), which you place directly on the carpet and its underlay. This board should at least cover the footprint of the shelf feet, preferably slightly larger.

- On top of this, you can attach furniture glides made of plastic or felt to the shelf feet, but from a firmer material so they don’t sink in.

The reason is that the board significantly reduces the compressibility of the carpet floor while increasing the shelf’s contact area. This greatly minimizes wobbling.

If you want a bit more stability, you could consider placing small floor brackets or rubber buffers at the front and back under the shelf to reduce lateral movement. However, this would probably only be necessary under heavy load.

If you like, I can also provide recommendations for sources and dimensions.

Hello megigu,

since the shelf stands freely in the room, you could try equipping the feet with small non-slip rubber or silicone pads that prevent sinking while also reducing slipping.

Another option would be to slightly widen the feet of the KALLAX, for example with wooden strips or plastic profiles, custom-made or attached accordingly to create a larger surface area.

This reduces pressure points and makes the shelf more stable without the need to fix it to the floor or wall.
