Hello everyone,

I am considering using my IKEA KALLAX shelf as a CD storage unit since I have quite a few CDs that are currently just lying around without much order. My question is how to make the best use of the available space in the KALLAX without making it look cluttered or confusing. Maybe you have tips on how to organize the compartments most effectively, whether to use additional shelves or maybe accessories for the compartments to store the CD cases better? I’m also curious if the KALLAX is suitable for small to medium-sized CD collections (around 200-300 pieces) or if there are better furniture options for this purpose.

Looking forward to your experiences and creative ideas!

Use CD cases standing upright and fill the compartments completely. Shelves are only necessary if you want to organize smaller formats.

I completely understand not wanting to just stack CDs loosely – that always feels messy. I have a KALLAX myself, but I use dividers in the compartments to separate different genres. Standard CD cases usually fit quite well in the squares, and I also have some lightweight plastic organizers that allow you to stack several CDs side by side without tipping.

I’ve tried shelves, but they reduce the height, so only very flat items fit in some cases. I would rather consider placing the CD cases vertically side by side and stabilize them with small bookends, especially if the compartment isn’t completely filled.

There are also specially made inserts you can put inside to create more order. So I’d suggest experimenting with small dividers if you like different sorting methods. That not only makes the shelf more functional but also more visually appealing. 🙂

That’s an important point. However, I would like to suggest approaching the question of optimal space utilization in a more systematic way. CDs are standardized, so two-level solutions only make sense if the space would otherwise be oversized. For around 200-300 CDs, the KALLAX with the standard dimensions can be sufficient—provided each compartment is fully used, as @lubla mentioned.

Furthermore, I would consider how often CDs are taken out. If quick access is needed, shelves or too many dividers can sometimes hinder clarity. Instead, clear labeling of CDs according to a consistent organization system (alphabetical, genre, year) might be more effective.

Therefore, my recommendation is to start with minimal organization and fully utilize the space, then add extra elements if needed—not the other way around. And a critical question: Does anyone have experience if additional supports on the sides of the compartments increase stability?

The KALLAX is actually a very good choice for CDs, especially because of the standard size of its compartments. Typically, 3 to 4 fully filled compartments are enough for around 200-300 CDs. This provides a solid structure and sufficient stability.

I recommend storing the CDs vertically to protect the cases and allow quick access. Additionally, you can equip the compartments with light sorting accessories—so-called CD dividers made of wood or plastic that can be easily moved.

Important: Avoid overfilling the compartments, as this makes removing CDs difficult and unnecessarily stressful for them. It’s better to keep a compartment half full and plan for a slightly larger overall shelf.

Regarding accessories: there are interesting adjustable shelves designed specifically for CD cases. However, their usefulness is limited and should be carefully considered.

Overall, the KALLAX is suitable for your purpose as long as you keep the organization clear and don’t overload it with too many accessories.

Exactly, that’s the main issue with shelving units like the KALLAX. The dimensions are optimized for a CD case, but if you try to cram in too many, usability suffers.

I would disagree with the suggestion to “fill completely” and recommend prioritizing ergonomic access instead. It’s better to leave some space rather than squeeze everything in — this is better for your collection and your peace of mind in the long run.
