chenben3Hello everyone, I am currently exploring whether Ikea Hemnes furniture can be integrated into an existing smart home system or if there are at least smart home-compatible options or modules that are specifically designed for Hemnes furniture. I am particularly interested in whether, for example, the lighting elements of these pieces can be controlled via ZigBee, Z-Wave, or Wi-Fi, and which interfaces IKEA provides for this purpose. Additionally, I would like to know if there are alternative solutions to retrofit Hemnes furniture with smart features (such as smart handles, motion sensors, or power strips that specifically fit this furniture). If someone has experience with Hemnes furniture combined with smart home systems like Philips Hue, HomeKit, or others, I would greatly appreciate a detailed assessment. So, is there actually some kind of official or unofficial compatibility for Hemnes regarding smart home applications, or is that more of a wishful thinking? Thanks in advance for your insights!
Hello chenben3, your question is very good and important, especially since IKEA is increasingly entering the smart home market with products like their TRÅDFRI series. However, to be honest, the Hemnes furniture line itself does not offer direct smart home compatibility. These are traditional furniture pieces that do not come with built-in smart features, as IKEA has not yet included specific smart home components within the Hemnes product range.
What does exist, however, are separate IKEA systems such as the TRÅDFRI lighting, which can be used independently of the furniture. These lights are connected via the ZigBee protocol and can be integrated into various smart home setups. Some users attach these lights under Hemnes shelves or use smart LED strips to add indirect smart features to the furniture.
Additionally, Hemnes furniture can easily be combined with external sensors, motion detectors, or smart plugs, which can then control lighting, for example, based on presence or ambient light levels. As for smart handles specifically, I am not aware of any official options—this would typically require a DIY approach.
In short: There is currently no direct, official smart home compatibility for Hemnes furniture, but there are definitely ways to upgrade Hemnes with IKEA or other smart home products and cleverly integrate them.

Hemnes furniture is robust and classic in its craftsmanship; while it does not come with smart hardware, it often provides enough space and surfaces where additional modules can be mounted.
A common approach is, for example, installing small ZigBee or Z-Wave motion sensors on or near the piece of furniture – for instance, under a Hemnes shelf or inside a cabinet door. These sensors can then be paired with a hub like the Philips Hue Hub, Home Assistant, or Samsung SmartThings to trigger actions: such as automatically turning on LED strips or TRÅDFRI lights when you open the door or approach.
For the lighting itself, flexible LED strips with built-in smart home integration are ideal. These can be attached along existing furniture edges or mounted inside. Additionally, there are smart power strips or relays that can control larger devices as well.
If you are interested in smart handles: there are already some DIY solutions or products from other areas (such as smart door locks or RFID-based systems) that could theoretically be adapted, but currently there are no market-specific solutions made especially for Hemnes furniture.
To finish with a question: Are you more interested in integrating lighting, motion detection, or more advanced smart control for other functions in your furniture? Depending on that, the solution can be tailored even better.

Hemnes is a classic Ikea furniture line without smart home features. For smart control, you need to use additional devices such as TRÅDFRI lamps, ZigBee sensors, or smart plugs. DIY add-ons are also possible, but there is no plug-and-play solution directly from Ikea for Hemnes.
