Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into whether there is a proven building guide or at least a clear approach for combining IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially the well-known wooden frames and fronts, with other furniture materials. I am thinking, for example, of combining them with metal or glass accents, as well as alternative wooden furniture that is not from IKEA. The goal is to enhance the classic HEMNES look with a mix of different materials to create a unique and high-quality overall impression.

Are there any known guides or practical tips for such combinations? How do you handle mounting and fixing points when the materials are very different? And what should be paid special attention to in order to ensure stability and appearance?

I look forward to exchanging ideas and hearing about your experiences!

There is no official assembly guide from IKEA for this.

It is best to use standard connectors and drillings that are suitable for the materials.

Make sure to pay attention to different materials so that they are compatible in height and thickness.

There is no universal construction guide, as the HEMNES series is designed with solid pine wood components and fixed connectors.

If you want to integrate other materials, you should first check the structural requirements. For example, metal frames often resemble structures made from rectangular steel profiles secured with screw connectors – simply using HEMNES connectors here is not very effective. It is best to create detailed measurements of the existing modules and carefully consider where alternative elements can be integrated both mechanically and visually.

Also, pay close attention to the connection techniques, as some materials like glass require special fasteners. In practice, using brackets, anchors, or metal bolts suitable for the specific material is helpful. If you want to add wooden furniture pieces, custom adapter frames that screw the two materials together are a good option.

Overall, there is no off-the-shelf guide, but with some DIY skills and careful planning, modifications are quite feasible.

Exactly! Last year, I created a combination of HEMNES wood elements with metal legs and I can tell you: the result looks super stylish! 🙂

The key is not to improvise too much, but to carefully plan which connection points make sense beforehand – and, of course, to use good tools!

I believe that with a bit of courage and creativity, you can really upgrade HEMNES and create custom furniture you won’t find anywhere else! Don’t hesitate to give it a try; it’s a lot of fun and the results can be really impressive!
